I posted actual legislation passed by the GOP and signed by the president, the republicans post extreme views that almost no one actually has

we talk about the CURRENT PRESIDENT and republicans respond with some fringe non-elected figure who hardly anyone supports

Sad, sad, sad

They don't. And if you want to fact check, Farrakhan endorsed Trump.

From 15 years ago? What relevance does it have for this discussion? Did Obama embrace his policies? Did he put him in the Cabinet?

So compare that the the number of sitting GOP politicians that support White Nationalism, starting with King from Iowa whom the GOP controlled House has not censured and whom the RNC gave money for this last election cycle.

My post is sincere. I think the modern GOP is basically evil so I am having a hard time understanding how someone can still be a Republican if they are a decent person.

Here is my experience with “nice” Republicans. It is usually one of the following options:

1. They are not actually nice. They know how nice people typically act so they can keep up a facade for a good while.
2. They are racist, but they do not actually know that they are racist. I think these people are different from #1 in that they are slightly less sociopathic.
3. They say they are Republicans because their family/social group is Republican, but they really have no idea what Republican policies are and don’t keep up with things like the tax cuts or family separation. When they find out what conservative policies actually are, they either abandon the Republicans or retreat back into their “I don’t know about that, but the Democrats are worse,” stance.
4. They are one issue voters- abortion, immigration, fear of Muslims, whatever. The part is greater than the whole to them. These people make the most sense to me.

True. But try to point out the acceptance of antisemitism among Democrats, and watch the liberal attack dogs jump into place.

Being a republican is a bit like being a Catholic. You may be repulsed by what is currently going on in the church (sexual abuse et al) but you still believe in the basic tenets of the church. You're hopeful that there will be change but your confidence is eroding. I'm a republican and a catholic but I may not be either in a year from now. And i believe I'm a nice person.
