Just found out that a nice person I know is a Republican

Yeah, I think the bubble is a good explanation. Good post, but I have to point out there is a big difference between handouts to strangers via tax redistribution vs handouts to your own family!

The problem is that they have limited access to actual facts and figures and the ability to understand them in a way that isn't highly emotionally charged.

My FIL is a multimillionaire former CEO who is terrified of communism, immigrants and an estate tax, he doesn't believe in "handouts" but he and MIL financially support and subsidize most of their kids (as in, they bought houses for their kids, pay private school tuition, provide free vacations and even pay for their kids' housekeeping among other things).

They are all college educated, and yet they still all vote based on fear and taxes and have complete ignorance about things like Islam, Judaism, Catholicism, foreign countries (they have never traveled outside the US). They don't even know that one of our family members is secretly gay, even though he's 50 years old and still unmarried.

Their values aren't derived from logic and common sense and a real-world education.

They simply watch Fox all the time, Listen to AM radio in the car, and believe "reading" is buying Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity books.

They'll still drive you to your chemo, but they think Hillary Clinton should be in prison, even though she's never been found to have committed any crimes at all.

That's the bubble.

Terrified of immigrants? Come now. Surely you mean illegal border crossers, who may (or may not) have additional crimes under their belts.

My post is sincere. I think the modern GOP is basically evil so I am having a hard time understanding how someone can still be a Republican if they are a decent person.

Most Republican voters are perfectly nice people (same as Democrats)

Don't let partisan hysteria make you hate your fellow citizens.

As first step, list 5 horibble things Dem politicians have done, and think whether you'd like to be labeled a horrible person just for voting Dem.

Individual Dems have been very bad but I can't think of horrible policies passing Congress because of Democrats

Trumpism, which is what the GOP is now, however, follows Trump's narcissism and racism. If you support that, then not sorry, you are evil.

What a deplorable comment, PP.

We all heard Trump say "grab em by the p#ssy" and "I am a nationalist". When someone tells you who they are, believe them.

Must be hard to hear that with all of the a-holes jostling around in the basket.

My neighbor is the salt of the earth. He wouldn't hesitate to give you the shirt off his back. Plus, he's a Republican. And I don't mean the country club variety. We're talking full-on InfoWars wackadoodle. We enjoy having a beer together on occasion, and we don't discuss politics.

Or saw Hillary as the known evil and trump as the unknown one.

A political party is larger than one person OP.

A good person does not continue to support trump. End of discussion.

OP did not say she was a moron. Anyone with two working brain cells could see the “known evil”.

I had no problem with people who were republicans 20 years ago. I didn't agree, but at least the disagreements were of the policy variety.

Current Republicans? Nope. I don't care to understand. You are standing for racism, misogyny, xenophobia and hatred. We have a difference in humanity.

Every liberal woman I know dates or married republican men. The liberal men I know who are are or were married to women are either divorced or have serious anger issues and marriages are on the rocks
