Is it healthy snacks? I ask because every time out PTA insists on dessert parties/cookies parties so much gets wasted. So many of the teachers are avoiding sweets. Then you have to people who are gluten free or diabetic or have nut allergies. I remember one time they were just randomly giving kids in aftercare the endless leftover cookies. The problem is the teachers tell the PTA they loooove it and then those of us who say it ends up with so much wasted seem like we don't know what we are talking about.
So...I would give if it was assorted healthy snacks and just some treats, but not to a treat fest knowing how much might end up in the trash opr given to kids who don't need the sugar. |
| This is why I have zero interest in joining or supporting the pta. Very little of what they do benefits education. It’s mostly busy work for women to do. |
But it's much better to receive useless donations and end up tossing them out. Got it! |
My DW and I have a total of 42 years teaching between us and we have never experienced having a snack cart at school. |
| Our elementary school is doing this as well this year. I did not make a donation for the teacher bar snack bar because I donate to the annual Thanksgiving pie event for the school staff every year which is coming up. Our school's PTA does things like this all the time and the primary motive seems to be so their children are given extra special treatment and unfortunately, this happens. the children of the PTA members are assigned the "best" teachers every year, they are friendly with the school staff and they hear and get info. about personnel issues and other children that should be confidential and not shared. Our elementary school is very clickish. I 100% support the school staff and appreciate everything the teachers have done for my teacher. however, the PTA seems to cross the line. |
PTAs are run by SAHMs with nothing to do all day. They pretend this is a "job." 99% of what they do is busy work they create for themselves and the teachers neither ask for it or want/expect it. Almost none of the teachers in this school will visit this snack bar because we are there to work those days which is what we are doing. We don't want snacks, we aren't juveniles. If you don't like this proposition, and I don't blame you, tell the PTA. The teachers have nothing to do with it and don't care at all about it. |
I'm all pro teacher all the time, but this post makes me so angry. You do NOT need to slam SAHms to make your point. I am a working mom, but a couple of my SAH best friends are all PTA involved for only the best of reasons. I'm sure as a teacher you hate it when people come on here mocking and denigrating teachers. Why on Earth would you do that to another group of people who areonly trying to help you and make a small difference? |
Thank you. I’m in a high school and have tried putting tissues on the syllabus as an optional supply for the course. I’ve received 2-3 boxes and don’t even list them anymore. To the PTA parents - Please remember the basics like tissues and hand wipes when your children become older. The classes need them more than ever with food allergies and kids coming in eating. Teachers buy them. Skip the food. |
+1, from a teacher. |
It sounds like you have an issue with your PTA. PTAs are run by parent volunteers. So instead of complaining about the well-meaning parents who do spend their precious time volunteering for the benefit of your children's school and teachers, go volunteer with the PTA yourself and make the changes you would like to see. |
What do people not understand about pay being relative to the people who live there? VS is a poorer state than MD as well. |
At our school you don't really have a choice on this one. On teacher snack cart collection days the PTA moms collect the snack donations as your kid walks through the front door. Who's brave enough to make their kids the ones who don't contribute and stand up to this nonsense? SO, I send my boys to school with oreo cookies or some other nut-free product that does't need to be chilled and we're done. ...but I have to pack a snack for my 6 and 8 year old kids AND also one for their adult teacher? I don't get it. Surely there's better ways to show appreciation. |
Sometimes the company, other times it's gifts from vendors or trades. |
YES this! |
Our PTA is majority working mothers, as is the one where I teach. I don't know if you are bitter that you have to work, you have a crappy school or it's something else but your attitude sucks. I say this as a former SAHM who returned to teaching (and I like the snacks but don't expect them) |
