Georgetown Prep is taking a beating with this Kanvanugh scandal...does it deserve it?

According to the Holton letter and many postings in this board, the partying culture still exists. It’s the attitude that (1) that doesn’t happen at our magical school and (2) if it does, it’s so much worse at Landon, NCS, Bullis, fill-in-name-of-any-school-not-the-we-pay-for. Yes, it happened at your school in the ‘80s and it happens now.

and yet at this prestigious private Boarding school it happened as well. You can keep telling yourself that your perfect and everyone else sucks. Yet stories seem to pop up about schools like St. Pauls where supposedly the best and the brightest are attending.

It doesn’t deserve it based on how the students are now. Georgetown Prep dropped the hammer on bad behavior in maybe the 90’s?
Before that there was hazing going on even at the school during school hours. The boys used to shove their naked butts on a student who was held down by others?? So, you can get an idea about how boys at the school used to be out of control:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1991/01/15/dismissal-upheld-in-prep-school-hazing-incident/524fa325-7171-41b4-8edc-1d5fa8706d9f/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.8abfd7ce901c

Now they seem to be turning out decent well behaved men with good values. I know many of them. Times have changed for the better.

They only sort of deserve it because of the arrogance displayed instead of humility when two former students were nominated for the Supreme Court. Considering the schools past humility would have been a better course of action.

And look at that - boys, even when passed out drunk, don’t like being sexually assaulted.

"I don't think too kindly of the school," he said. "I plan to have my name expunged from the rolls." The man testified yesterday that 19 family members had attended the private boys' school on Rockville Pike.

The hazing allegedly took place Dec. 16. A 15-year-old sophomore who passed out after drinking too much later accused four other students of butting him on several occasions. The student who filed the lawsuit was dismissed Dec. 20 after Roach denied an appeal.

But others think that it’s okay because everyone was doing it. And the Catholic leadership claimed that they didn’t know anything about it for all those years.
So very weird.

But seriously, the school changed course 100% in the 1990’s. Only Kavanaugh attended during the wild debauchery period. At the time the schools laxity was doing those boys no favors as you can see now.

A good way to judge for yourself is to...judge for yourself. Don't go to an open house when they have their Eddie Haskell routine well rehearsed. Attend sporting events. Observe the students, teachers and coaches in their "natural habitat".

If you see the student's section and say to yourself, "I would be proud to have my son be a part of that".... then maybe they don't deserve it.

If you see the student's section and say to yourself, "I would be horrified if that was my child" ... then they do deserve it.

Many see the student section are horrified and say, well that is not all the student, surely my son will make friends that are not part of THAT. Sure.. maybe, but you can't deny the culture.

Seriously go to a game, judge for yourself. If you want a real show, go to a Landon vs. Prep Lacrosse game.

A good way to see the future students is to go to the basketball tournament in the winter. You will see the "future" students. Watch the Mater Dei vs. St. Jermone's or Washington Jesuit basketball game. See how they act when playing diverse schools. That is quite a show.

No the school does not deserve it. There are bad apples at all schools - you can’t judge an entire school by Kavanaugh and Judge. Gorsuch went there and didn’t have any of these skeletons in his closet. I’m sure he doesn’t still joke about drinking and debauchery and I highly doubt his yearbook page had references to drug enemas and women who deserved to be struck regularly like a gong.

The school itself is pretty diverse these days and the ‘minority’ students that I have observed there seem to be fully involved and comfortable at the school.

Any push for change though - including not changing idiotic things at sporting events- is a good thing.

My DD dated a wonderful young man from prep and went to parties and activities with prep boys and emerged happy and unscathed I can tell you.
Additionally we have known many impressive, humble, hard working prep boys over the last 15 years or so.

As a new Prep parent, I am saddened by all the negative comments and blanket statements about the school and students that imply that every single boy who attends is somehow a rapist, a criminal, an elitist, a snob, entitled, a drunk, etc. These are incredibly hard working, decent young men who are being dragged into a political sh**show not of their own doing. It is a complete distraction for them (just waiting for the news crews to be parked outside of campus any second now) and it is completely unfair that people are saying such horrible things about them. They had nothing to do with an incident that (may or may not have) happened 30+ years ago.

and i know one that got so drunk at a before party he had to Uber home and left the girl to fend for herself.

"pretty diverse"... no it is not.

Prep has an issue in my opinion. It does not in your opinion.

Let the OP go to view sporting events and judge for herself.

Nobody said every single boy... just a bunch... too many.

My god! How awful, your poor boys might have new crews outside their school. That would be so traumatic, how would they deal. Maybe you can have counselors on campus.

True, but their dads do.

But you aren’t saddened by sexual assault? Perpetuating the problem. GP is to blame for what happens to it, you should be upset with how they are handling it, with how they allowed their reputation to be tarnished. This is of their own doing, and the boys that are there now that aren’t part of this culture don’t deserve it, but the school should be protecting them, handling it properly.

Holton has press trying to get in too...

Let me ask you a question. Domyoumtjink the likelihood that the woman is lying is reflected in her insistence that the FBI do an investigation before she will testify? It is it more likely that someone who is lying would testify and hope the FBI wouldn't investigate?

And if you are truly innocent wouldn't your preference be that a thorough investigation take place before the accuser testifies? Or would it be more beneficial to you to have her testify without an investigation?

See how this works? She is conducting herself as someone who is being truthful, he is not.

Some super angry anti-Prep (anti-Catholic perhaps?) posters on this board. Why? What is the point? I would highly suggest meditation to help you manage your anger issues.

Only thing else I know about Georgetown Prep is that I had a neighbor who from moved from Virginia to a couple blocks away to send his two boys there for high school and then sold their house and moved back to Virginia when their younger boy went to college. They were the only people in our area with Romney 2012 signs and they were bigger than the normal yard signs.

It's annectdata, but putting it out there for anyone interested.

Romney, by all accounts, is a highly honorable and impeccably behaved man, so what is your point?

I grew up in a private school world similar to DC's and people harping about this school or that school are missing the point. [b]These kinds of juvenile teen male behavior fueled by alcohol happens everywhere, at every school, public or private, rich or poor. Singling out Georgetown Prep is really missing the point. The boys at Sidwell and GDS are no better behaved.

Sidwell and GDS haven't had scandals like

Landon boys setting up a "draft" for girls https://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/09/opinion/09dowd.html

Eight Landon boys cheating on the SAT together https://www.washingtonian.com/2003/10/01/from-the-archives-our-sons-have-something-to-say/

Prep boys expelled for hazing then having the entitlement to sue the school https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1991/01/15/dismissal-upheld-in-prep-school-hazing-incident/524fa325-7171-41b4-8edc-1d5fa8706d9f/?utm_term=.08f60248349a

Sidwell and GDS didn't produce 5/46 of student-athletes on a team that was accused of raping a woman. Sidwell and GDS haven't produced an alumnus like George Huguely.

Yes, but: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/dc-police-investigating-report-of-rape-at-sidwell-friends-school/2016/03/17/9b524470-ec93-11e5-bc08-3e03a5b41910_story.html?utm_term=.b65ba1a0bc3d

The Sidwell boosters will ignore this recent fact. And the Duke incident, with Landon alums, was shown to be false. The poster above fails to note they were at college and not high school. The Sidwell incident was during school on campus. All this shows bad things happen and any school can be associated with them.
