Or you might want to just wait and see what he's like when he gets closer to high school age. There are lots of excellent choices. |
Exactly. OP you should let your son be involved in the decision. My son shadowed at both GZ and GP, and although the schools are both Jesuit, they have stark differences. DS chose Gonzaga because it just felt like a better fit for him. GP would have been a much better commute. |
As someone who grew up in the area and am somewhat a contemporary of the players involved in the national discussion, I can say yes, the reputation is deserved. |
Of course they did. Which is why the school deserves the reputation it has. |
Live in Bethesda with neighbor whose kid went to Holton Arms. Two years ago she told me that she tried to prevent her daughter from socializing with boys from Georgetown Prep and Landon. Said she was worried about parties and drinking culture at the schools.
Only thing else I know about Georgetown Prep is that I had a neighbor who from moved from Virginia to a couple blocks away to send his two boys there for high school and then sold their house and moved back to Virginia when their younger boy went to college. They were the only people in our area with Romney 2012 signs and they were bigger than the normal yard signs. It's annectdata, but putting it out there for anyone interested. |
Romney, by all accounts, is a highly honorable and impeccably behaved man, so what is your point? I grew up in a private school world similar to DC's and people harping about this school or that school are missing the point. These kinds of juvenile teen male behavior fueled by alcohol happens everywhere, at every school, public or private, rich or poor. Singling out Georgetown Prep is really missing the point. The boys at Sidwell and GDS are no better behaved. |
NP here. It makes perfect sense to me. Holton looks dumb coming up with a letter of support signed by 200 people who didn't even know the accuser. |

It's the attitude of the schools that bother people. Like the fact that they allowed comments about drinking to be published in the yearbook or that in Judge's book he talks about attending a party with strippers with one of his teachers. |
I went to a public school and made comments in my yearbook about smoking pot. That wasn't censored either. GP is a great institution. The people harping on it are the same ones who have done it in the past, but now they have a new topic. Signed, mom of DC in another DC private |
Sidwell and GDS haven't had scandals like Landon boys setting up a "draft" for girls https://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/09/opinion/09dowd.html Eight Landon boys cheating on the SAT together https://www.washingtonian.com/2003/10/01/from-the-archives-our-sons-have-something-to-say/ Prep boys expelled for hazing then having the entitlement to sue the school https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1991/01/15/dismissal-upheld-in-prep-school-hazing-incident/524fa325-7171-41b4-8edc-1d5fa8706d9f/?utm_term=.08f60248349a Sidwell and GDS didn't produce 5/46 of student-athletes on a team that was accused of raping a woman. Sidwell and GDS haven't produced an alumnus like George Huguely. |
Wasn't there a rape scandal at Sidwell a year or so ago? It was briefly talked about on here. |
Yes, but: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/dc-police-investigating-report-of-rape-at-sidwell-friends-school/2016/03/17/9b524470-ec93-11e5-bc08-3e03a5b41910_story.html?utm_term=.b65ba1a0bc3d |
Oh come on. That Prep story was from over 25 years ago. I guess you can't find anything more recent? The Sidwell rape was just just two years ago. |
The late 70s and early 80s were a very different time. Remember, a bunch of adults partying and doing coke with 4th grade Drew Barrymore was considered no big deal back then. Schools had student smoking areas. In many places the drinking age was still 18. Watch just about any comedian or comedy/movie from that time and see what was considered acceptable, mainstream joking. Heck watch 16 Candles which is considered one of the most classic movies for teens from that era. What was considered acceptable socializing and acceptable speech back then, in private schools, public schools and professional worlds would never fly today. All of the adults in power better hope that their teenager skeletons from 30, 40 years ago don't start falling out of their respective closets. Very few of them will be able to withstand the bar that might be being set right now. |
