Who do you think mows lawns of the NoVa McMansions?

OP, are you sure you want to go to VA with neighbors like these PPs?

My inlaws are in McLean, they are immigrants and very liberal. Their neighborhood is mixed but younger families seem more progressive. But you couldn’t pay me to live there. Very sheltered and next to nothing “downtown.” Good toy store though.

OP here. Thanks for the feedback. Appreciate the candor. I was trying to be a little tongue-in-cheek about the moneyed republican thing but I can see it might have hit some people wrong. So apologies for that.

I realized that others put their finger more squarely on it--it's not a race/politics issue, it's a money thing. We have decent careers but are not wealthy, we got married late and are big savers, which is the only reason we're able to look at places like McLean, which we targeted b/c of the schools and commute. We have one car that is 20 years old. Our idea of vacation is piling the kids into the backseat and driving up 95 to visit inlaws, not flying to Vail or Euorope. I worry if we move to one of these fancy suburbs even though we might be able to afford our house we can't afford the lifestyle that others around us may be living and I will feel like a fish out of water. Maybe we'll rethink this...

And thank you also for those who gave suggestions for other neighborhoods, we will check them out!

We're a mixed race immigrant family with two kids, have been living EOTP in the District but now it's time to move for middle school. All the people we know who live outside DC live in Takoma Park, Silver Spring, Kensington, a few in the Rockville area. Every time I do kid activities in MoCo I run into friends. It's definitely more our vibe BUT the commute sucks from there and would be way better for us from NoVa. Inner Arlington seems expensive for the space and the schools don't seem as good as Fairfax. So we're thinking-gasp-McLean or Falls Church, the more walkable parts (I know those are pretty few and far between). I have heard some neighborhoods are friendly but I'm afraid that everyone will be a moneyed Republican lobbyist and I won't fit in. I know I probably have inaccurate stereotypes, but are there down to earth, crunchy, immigrant, mixed race, LGBTQ families out there?

TIA.. I tried to ask my real estate agent these questions and couldn't really get answers. I think she thinks I'm crazy.

Why are you so closed minded?

We are a heterosexual, white, American couple that welcomes immigrants and couples of all types.

+1.

Signed,

Immigrant who had a similar reaction reading OP's note.

OP, in your shoes I wouldn't move to a place where I didn't know anyone I trusted and could discuss this directly with. Think again...are you sure you don't know anyone who's done something similar?

I am more familiar with the immigrants who live in the NoVa McMansions.

Immigrants are not necessarily liberals especially in McLean area. We're first gen immigrants and we together with many of our friends are firmly against liberals and democrats.

You want "better school," and you are basically asking us which white dominated area you should move to?

Do you see the problem with that?

McLean is more about having $$$ than anything else. It matters more than the color of your skin or political affiliation.

Liberal and lots of money seem to be at odds.

We moved from NYC to Mclean...religious minority and liberal democrats. I was extremely nervous based on threads like these. We are in a Mclean HS pyramid and have been pleasantly surprised. I would guess our immediate neighborhood is more democrats than republican. 4/5 of our neighbors that identify as republicans have flat out told us on their own accord that this current government is the one they signed up for (voted for) and have been nothing but welcoming.

Now, the area is somewhat bland. The schools are safe, clean and have involved teachers with lots of opportunities for enrichment. All our friends moved to Silver Spring too. Come join us in Mclean. We’re here for the commute as well.

Is or is NOT the one they signed up for? I guess I'd find it somewhat unnerving if I lived near self-identified Republicans who told me with a smile on their face that they signed up for this nonsense.

Most Republicans in McLean (and it is mostly Democratic now, especially in the McLean HS areas) strike me as what used to be considered mainstream Republican, not MAGA types.

How so?

Mclean is not walkable.

If you require walk ability and friendly neighbors consider falls church something similar to this house.

You will be 1 mile from McLean metro and the scotts run/capital one (wegmans)development.

Another one of the phenomenally stupid comments I’ve read on DCUM. Congrats on being a total moron.
