Where to live for best public schools

Anonymous
Cherry picking? The PP suggested 22152 for a good balance in schools and home prices. There is one high school in 22152 and that's WSHS. All of those schools serve that zip code.

you can get a condo in Mclean for 700K and live there until your kids graduate.

Worse schools in VA:

- Justice (aka Stuart)
- Falls church
- Schools in Springfield

Maybe, FCPS employee, you are part of the problem.

Perhaps the schools you list as the "worse" have been burdened by an overwhelming amount of poverty.

Hi All,

I’m sure this thread has been done before but I can’t find it. We’re buying a home. We have a toddler. I’m lazy and don’t want to move several times for schools. Where in NoVa is a good cluster? We max out at $700k and work in downtown DC so we’d like a not heinous commute. I’m on redfin and I’m seeing high schools in the 1’s and 3’s, WTF? That can’t be right. Am also looking at MoCo but people keep saying VA is a better buy than MD. We’re currently renting in Van Ness DC and would like to buy something by December. Please help. Thanks!

You're not looking very hard.

Feel free to give me a link.

Feel free to look it up yourself. There are many, many threads about the best pyramids in FFX.

You can also find some older townhomes that feed to various schools at price points under $700K:

I thought Lee was the HS having the most problems at the moment.

Lee and Mount Vernon.

FCPS focuses a lot of attention on Justice. Falls Church has a good administration and AP courses.

I have a few co-workers who live in Springfield and they love ot but the school scores scared me off. I guess the consensus is that the great school scores are to be ignored. Compared to Montgomery county they’re awful for NoVa.

What do you mean the school scores scared you off? West Springfield HS is excellent and rated so. Irving Middle School gets great reviews. A few of the elementary schools get lower ratings because of their mixed population, but the schools are all awesome. We are at Rolling Valley and I can't imagine a better atmosphere.

Really, if you stay in bounds for West Springfield, Lake Braddock, or Woodson you will definitely be happy with the schools and you'll be able to get a nice house and lot. You definitely sacrifice in commute to DC, though. Lots of people do it, but it's not easy and if both parents are commuting downtown it would definitely be hard. Depends on how flexible your work schedules are.

Lee is not 22152, though it is Springfield. There may be one pocket of 22152 that goes to Lee, but with a $700,000 housing budget she wouldn't be looking there anyway.

McLean, Vienna, Falls Church City.

McLean is crazy expensive.
Vienna is a mixed bag, as is Falls Church depending on the cluster.

OP, inventory is low right now. Give it two weeks, there should be a little surge and then nothing until February or so.

There is only one “cluster” in FCC.

You can get a great townhouse for less than $700k in Winter Hill in Falls Church City. You can walk everywhere and the schools are fantastic!

Winter Hill is old and dumpy - looks like a 1960s public housing project in SE or maybe Newark. Avoid.
