Is uva a prestigious college?

That says more about Californians than anything.

Californians can be quite provincial about colleges. For a lot of people the UCs are the center of the universe and anything that’s not a UC or an Ivy is just meh. Which of course isn’t true but explains the PP’s post.

Uh, East Coast people are even more provincial about colleges! If you didn't go to college on the East Coast, then you didn't go to a real college. It's like the people who, when I say I'm from the West Coast, will tell me they were just "out west" and how much they enjoyed their visit to Kansas City.

Uva’s law and business schools are highly ranked nationwide. Your California friends must not be very educated.

That says more about your friends than it does about UVA. It's the flagship of one of our 50 states. It's like saying you haven't heard of the University of Texas, or Michigan, or New Hampshire. You may not regard it highly or know much about it, but to not have heard of it means you must walk around with your head in a bag.

NP. We lived in northern CA for 5 years and my dh is a UVA alum. People didn’t regard UVA as any different than any other big state U. It’s not that it’s unheard of, it’s just that it isn’t considered among the elites.

+1 another from CA

I think most would consider those schools to be prestigious as well.

I think this is true for just about everyone in any part of the country. Until I started reading this board and College Confidential, I didn't even know what UC's were, much less which ones were good or not. The truth is there are only a very small number of schools that would get a wow from pretty much anyone throughout the country. There are many other highly selective colleges that get a wow regionally or nationally among people in the know, but not among the masses on a national scale.

Um, no. It's a good state school. But no one outside of this area considers it prestigious.

UVA is an elite public university. Whether some Californians are aware of that or choose to acknowledge it speaks only to their own mindset. It’s like asking some people on the East Coast to weigh in on Pomona or Claremont McKenna.

Well considering that the vast majority of students choose to go south for college, I would say it's southern location would be a plus.

I remember a few years ago reading that Amy Chua- The original Tiger Mom's daughter was applying to UVA along with only two others - Harvard and Yale. Obviously it was her safety, but I think that says something.

Which kid? As I recall one DD was a stand-out and the other one was more, let's say, not such of a stand-out.

I can do that. They're both harder to get into than UVA and more prestigious in academic circles.

Yes, and some Californians know of UVA's prestige. Your comment proves nothing, other than that you are an ass.
