Wow, what a sad and lame observation. That’s all you took from the video?!

I think he has a nice body. Broad shoulders and the beard... Yes!!!

Yea but long arms and no neck. Bleh.

But also, he's using his body to evoke all sorts of responses with specific postures. the whole thing is a dance, even when he's not "dancing" like when he strikes the Jim Crow pose to shoot the guy in the hood (who was Trevon Martin's dad when he was playing the guitar) or when he's standing still, just a black male body standing kind of slouchy with low pants and no shirt is such a charged image in America, even before the gun hands pose and the other dance moves. If you told me he's normally fatter or fitter and he dieted/ate just for this video I would not be shocked (I don't think that's true though I think that's how he normally is).

That video is like he has electrodes in your brain and he is just setting them off whether you want him to or not. His face is incredible, he knows exactly how to move from "silly" to "scary" and he can do that and still convey a little contempt at you for being on the roller coaster he just took you on.

That video is insanely good, really important art.

Agree 1000%

Luvvie Ajayyi did a great analysis of the video as well, on her Awesomely Luvvie site.

I never watch music vides but bases on this thread I did and I found it to be very powerful. I had no idea Donald Glover had a rap alter ego. Does he record for real?

I thought this video was provocative, edgy, and uncomfortable at times. It's exactly what art should be, IMO.

Yes. Won a grammy this year.

You have probably heard a song of his—“Redbone”. It was everywhere last year. I used to hear it in the grocery store!

Thank you- I will have to google it. I'm very, very impressed with him. I loved him in the show Community and there was a second show I watched him on. I'm blanking on that name. This video is pure art. Amazing.

NP here. He was on Girls briefly. And, of course, he’s on Atlanta now.

Thanks for this. I enjoyed reading her take.

Just watched for the first time last night—wow. A lot to deconstruct here. And the violence is so abrupt and jarring. And then he dances on. I’ll read the Luvvie piece about it.

On a lighter note, he really is a good dancer. I’m black and only five years older, but after watching this video I realized my dance moves are stuck in the 90s! I need to incorporate some new moves.

I read a few years ago he made a comment that he fantasizes about being called the N word during relations by a white woman. He's made a lot of questionable statements in the past. I'm skeptical of this guy, a lot of people are jumping on the 'woke' bandwagon just for profit.

I don't know about the context of that quote in particular or whether he actually said it. I think Donald Glover is generally provocative though. He is probably a genius. I saw on Twitter yesterday someone saying that DG is what Kanye wants to be but in a good way. Here is an interview with him that really explores his thoughts and ego.

That was a joke in his comedy special. You need to watch it in context.
