Well, he was evoking the response he wanted from you there.

Wow, what a sad and lame observation. That’s all you took from the video?!

I think he has a nice body. Broad shoulders and the beard... Yes!!!

But also, he's using his body to evoke all sorts of responses with specific postures. the whole thing is a dance, even when he's not "dancing" like when he strikes the Jim Crow pose to shoot the guy in the hood (who was Trevon Martin's dad when he was playing the guitar) or when he's standing still, just a black male body standing kind of slouchy with low pants and no shirt is such a charged image in America, even before the gun hands pose and the other dance moves. If you told me he's normally fatter or fitter and he dieted/ate just for this video I would not be shocked (I don't think that's true though I think that's how he normally is).

That video is like he has electrodes in your brain and he is just setting them off whether you want him to or not. His face is incredible, he knows exactly how to move from "silly" to "scary" and he can do that and still convey a little contempt at you for being on the roller coaster he just took you on.

That video is insanely good, really important art.

+1

He went to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He knows what he's doing.

He does. That video is museum-worthy. His performance last night was amazing.

I've been a fan of his comedy since Derrick Comedy.

Atlanta is too high brow for me. After every episode there is so much to unpack. This is America is the same.

Beautiful work.

My post is above and my comment was just my gut reaction to his body. I had yet to unpack the meaning of the video. There is so, so, much going on there - a lot to do with our role in society as "minstrels" and "performers" but yet we don't have ownership of our bodies. Can't wait to read all of the critics unpack this video.

I hope everyone understands that we are in a unique period for Black art. If you look across what is happening in music, writing, visual and other performing arts the same themes are emerging. As usual, we African Americans go into creative overdrive in times of crisis. Please take time to take it in and find the meaning for yourselves.

I posted the link yesterday and my post was deleted. When I asked for an explanation Jeff never responded. So go to YouTube and type in Childish Gambino this is America. There are two shootings in the video so be ware. The video is very good.

Be sure to watch it a few times. After you have, if you haven’t already, watch it again once and try to ignore him and focus on what’s happening in the background.

NP here, I really admire the artist (mostly familiar with his acting and writing) and am glad this is getting attention, but viewers be aware the video has disturbing violence. I couldn't watch much past that first shooting and have only read about the rest.

He also has a comedy special that is now on Netflix.
