SOME (certainly not all) colleges asked for the GPA without BASIS using the AP score for a % of the final grade. They understood the BASIS grading system but also wanted to see how students performed in the class itself, without the AP score factored in. These were smaller schools that do holistic admissions. I would imagine that would not happen at a large state university, for example, that doesn't spend much time on each application. |
Maybe because they don't care what you think? Maybe the graduating seniors and their families don't need haters yammering on about whether their results were good enough in your eyes? When many of the small graduating class come from lower income minority families, there won’t be a lot of ivy acceptances. Like Latin, the perceived quality of acceptance for basis dc graduates should become better as the school matures (assuming there are more grads from higher income families). Or basis dc may just continue to be a strong middle school and a feeder for other high schools. |
Here is the 2017 list of where they actually went:
The colleges and universities that the BASIS DC Class of 2017 will attend include: Boston College University of Dallas Bowie State University Johnson & Wales University Barnard College Georgia State University University of Maine Hampshire College Princeton University Haverford College George Mason University University of Dallas Montgomery College Culinary Institute of America Morgan State University Coppin State University |
Interesting college acceptance list. I found this on the BASIS website:
"When a school has a widely recognized curriculum and results, colleges and universities take notice. BASIS Curriculum students have proven themselves both academically and personally, and are accepted to the finest higher learning institutions in the world. In reviewing the list of colleges students attend after they graduate from BASIS Curriculum Schools, it is easy to be impressed and we credit these impressive achievements to our students and their love of learning." I mean no disrespect to the kids, but I think someone needs to update the website. |
These parents are talking about students who get all kinds of "breaks" and "perks". BASIS is a small school and students can sense what is going on. For example if someone always aces in foreign language tests and exams but cannot comprehend simple sentences, then a fellow classmate might wonder what is going on . By the same token, if your student scores low on a test taken at school (including standardized tests) but gets a substantially higher score (over 50% improvement) taken at a different location just a couple months later. you cannot help but wonder ... Just because you have not experienced these things does not mean it has not happened. |
Thank you for the clarification |
That’s a pretty good list. As good as many privates. |
students who get all kinds of "breaks" and "perks".
Sorry, don't know how to put the quoted text in blue. This is PP responding to PP who explained the perceived breaks and perks afforded to some favored students. Thanks for explaining! And, I think I can relate a bit. I have felt rankled hearing my DC comment on what felt like unfair treatment. I even got myself involved on one occasion and ended up feeling a little misguided in my wrath. The examples you provide (acing written foreign language tests but not being able to converse, taking a test and months later retaking the same or similar test and doing much better) happen. I cannot speak to your experiences and I do not discount them. I hope your child is being fairly treated! In hindsight my own experiences of being angry on my child's behalf were not always fully warranted. Either way, I am happy that we are parents who would seek to advocate for our kids and their classmates. I hope you find the school responsive if you decide there are issues which need to be addressed to make the school better. |
What are you alleging? That students are routinely being given high marks in foreign language without speaking it? That students are buying good grades for tests at other locations? Those accusations are both serious and outlandish. Also, you sound unhinged. |
Sorry, not impressed (other than with Princeton) given the alleged stratospheric rigor of the curriculum and heavy STEM emphasis from MS. Signed, Ivy League grad who attended public HS where most grads didn't go on to 4-year colleges. |
^^ This is why we shouldn't share these lists on DCUM. For any school.

Well, it's only 14 kids, so hard to really draw any conclusions.
But as a Wilson parent who has been listening to my neighbors who are Basis parents go on and on and on about how superior Basis is, I would have expected a better list than this. |
Really? For 14 kids you expected more? And the school is less than 10 years old. Meanwhile half of Wilson students are not even on track to graduate. Lady, you are not expecting better from BASIS. You are not-so-secretly enraged that you overpaid for an unrenovated, ugly, front hall colonial in Wilson's catchment and no-one is impressed. Sorry you made a stupid real estate decision, but BASIS did well. ** NOT affiliated with BASIS, Wilson, the PCSB or DCPS. No axe to grind, no dog in the hunt. I just like popping the balloons of the self-important. |
No, you just like taking pot shots at the logical. |
