Curious- in what way is the legal system a nightmare? |
| I'm not sure if there is a way to go about getting the data, but based on my anecdotal experience at least 20% of the students at the University of Toronto are American. There are a ton of internationals in general, a large majority of whom are American. It is cold for sure but really not that bad in Toronto. |
1) the gap is rapidly closing 2) innovative business people today went to college 20 years ago. US undergrad education is becoming increasingly useless and self-indulgent 20 years ago Americans phds from foreign countries (eg china) would clamor to stay in the US academia... now they don't go home and some Americans are joining them |
This is what so many people are not getting. Hiring managers looking at your kids' education will more and more frequently have foreign degrees themselves and very different levesl of expectations re: technical skill set and "roundness" than more traditional employers. |

I went to UBC. British Columbia is a fantastic place to live and the education is excellent and affordable.
Toronto is full of douchebags and I wouldn't go to U of T if it was free. - a Canadian |
[b] Agree. Canada is one of the most educated countries in the world. My one year at an American university cost more than my entire undergrad in Canada including housing. |
Yeah, I hire for a large tech company and we don't care how well you can analyze French literature. When we're hiring engineers, we care about your technical skills. Period. Well-roundedness is a concept Americans like to tell themselves as they pay $300K for Larla's philosophy degree. |
...and if you actually needed someone to analyze french literature you would need to hire a phd. because at the undergrad level that was just some random course someone took while aimlessly exploring their interests. |
| You need to get a list of the US companies recruiting there. Unless the kids is hooked, it's a waste if $ to come back to us and send a bunch of applications online that nobody reads. How many fortune 100, big banks, brand name consulting hire from that school? How many go to a top 15 law school / med school in US? |
Probate was a nightmare, though this was a long time ago. I was just pointing out that Canada isn't exactly the cat's meow. |
Please. Who sounds like the douchebag here? Can't we lay the west coast vs. east coast thing to rest? Everyone else in Canada likes to rag on Toronto, because it gets most of the world's attention ("Oh, you're from Canada? Where, Toronto?"). It's a lovely place, with lovely people. It also happens to be the largest city and metropolitan area in the country, and far and away the most diverse. - another Canadian |
What great innovations have come out of China in the past 20 years? |
A bunch of social networks... just like the US |
You consider that an innovation? |
This is not true any more. My kids are in university in Toronto. Tuition is $10k, residence and meal plan is another 10k. |
