What ever happened to step aerobics?

Anonymous
I love step. I used to go to a class at the old gym on u street taught by Arthur (?), I think was his name. It was super advanced and hard and kept my mind focused on counting and steps, which is what I need for cardio. Otherwise I get incredibly bored. I haven’t been able to find another class like that one.

Another one here. I liked the intricacy, stringing the whole routine together "from the top" and adding the embellishments. I only did a bit of zumba, but I think they don't prompt and count? I live for the prompt and the eight count, and always know what comes next. In zumba you are always behind? Is that right?

I know OneLife Fitness locations in Rockville and Germantown have step classes.

I used to take step aerobics through the City of Gaithersburg rec classes, but they cut back on their offerings due to covid.

One of the things that happened to step over time is that it became too fast and dancey. When it started it was about bumping up your heart rate because of the stepping. There were a lot of big power moves. Over time people seemed to think faster was better so the moves became smaller and trickier. It was difficult for new people to pick it up. That’s my observation anyway. To this day I think it’s the best workout you can do.

This post is giving me flashbacks to the one credit aerobics classes I took in classes that were populated by sorority girls who came in full makeup and jewelry.

Ha! I took one of those classes in 1989 as a sorority girl and yes - I did my hair and makeup before class then put my hair in a high or side ponytail. There were cute ROTC guys in my class. Lots of bouncing stretches and bending.

Oh! Shimmering Shell ultra frosty lipstick and brown eyeshadow. I drew the line at door knocker earrings - they hurt!

Agree with PP, there are Step classes at OneLife Fitness, and there is Sports & Health in Bethesda.

I take mostly weight and HIIT classes. Last week I tried step and felt so uncoordinated! My cardio numbers were high though. It’s a really good workout.

Plenty of YouTube videos.

I do step with a kettlebell as part of my daily circuit for glute engagement. 10 pretty high steps each leg, go all the way but never put pressure on leg that I am not leading with. Great exercise.

Youtube - step is the only exercise I've found where I actually lose weight and get toned arms. I usually carry a couple of small hand weights when I do it.
