What ever happened to step aerobics?

I use the Kathy Smith series at home on DVD. She has several, and I just bought them all again hoping to keep them into my older years. The Pilates/yoga/boxing groups of today have no idea what it’s like to burn 800 calories in an hour. Step is amazing.

Love step hate Zumba--no real cueing and no big moves. I feel like it's the exercise for people who really don't want to be at the gym. I like old hi-low aerobics as well and this is also super hard to find and is also a lot harder than Zumba. I doubt the claims that spin burns so many calories--nothing gets me sweaty and red in the face like a old-time cardio class.

There are some great step videos on YouTube - free to use. I bought a step and I do them in my basement. I find it's the best exercise for me to lose weight. Also, some fitness classes use a step but they don't call it step aerobics so you have to watch a few to see which ones use it.

PP - these by Jenny Ford are super easy to follow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrexdnXTPYU

I love step, too! What step do you recommend buying for home use? Just checked Amazon and there are a few choices. Thanks!

In the 90s I used to pay $3 per jazzercise class. It was meant mostly for oldsters (which I was not at the time) so it was easy enough to follow along.

I also hate Zumba and as an aside, I think the Zumba clothes are hideous.

Having said that, though, anything that gets people moving is a good thing, even if it's not my thing.

Sounds like a lot of you are missing a great step class like I was. Check out YouTube – Gin Miller, who's credited with developing step aerobics back in the day has a terrific YouTube channel that I discovered last week. I started with this one, just a 30 min workout and I was feeling great and drenched with sweat afterwards:

The video at this link appears to have been produced this year. There are longer ones, some more basic, some more advanced. She makes it fun – highly recommend! Her channel is Gin Miller Productions. I do have my own step, so I love that I can get a great workout at home without having to drive to the gym (which I still do, but there are no great classes like these there)

I'm ok with that. But step is forever! It never gets old. My knees, on the other hand...

Uh, no. Clearly step is not forever. It is out. Get with the times, lady.

You are a miserable person.

Same, I’m 35 and loved step. I have DVDs and a step, but it actually started making my knees ache a couple years ago! My knees are usually fine and I don’t feel old enough to have “bad knees” so idk

I used to be a hard core stepper. The classes at old school Results on U street were AMAZING! I don't find Zumba hard enough and really don't like it. I've switched over to Peloton.

Loved loved step and never felt so worked out. Nothing has ever matched it.

That being said, like PP I know have "iffy" knees and may be a candidate for arth surgery in a few months. Not sure if I should go back to step. Like others, I hate Zumba.

Would appreciate any comments from "knee people" who did/do step.

I'm with you. I hated most Zumba classes. Too hard. High-low was easy to do and a great workout.
