Rap music do you have any rules about it?

So you DD is a druggie and participates in random sex parties?

Since my DH and I object to rather a lot of the language (N-word, b-word, and so forth), we don't allow our teen to play the "explicit" versions of a lot of her fave rap songs. DC is allowed to listen to those songs on her ipod, and when DC is alone.

So DC doesn't object to the language (N-word, b-word, and so forth)?

I’m a 50 something mom and I LOVE some rap music, like a lot of it and dislike a few artists completely. I tell my kids that it’s art, like other genres of music. But that if they repeat anything inappropriate then we have to turn it off. I have also asked my son to turn off certain songs/artists that have made me uncomfortable. He’s fine with that. And my daughters ntroduced my son to rap. I can appreciate a lot of music and we are music lovers in our family. It’s also a way to connect with your kids. Ask them what they like about a certain artist or song.

Lovely.

Opioids, xanax, molly (ecstasy) and/or codeine is in *every* rap song.

Your being very one sides say it is primarily a rap thing, drugs are a music thing and mentioned in all genres. Your problem with rap is that is it is spelled out pretty bluntly instead of being disguised in euphemism or hidden in theme.

Please point us to current non-rap songs in the top 20 or 50 or even 100 that are literally entirely about glorifying hard narcotics and/or abuse of women. With rap, it's literally EVERY popular song. If you can't see this is intentional, to brainwash our teens, I'm sorry you're so dull.

You need to expand your horizons of you honestly think there are NO popular rap songs that aren't about glofying the abuse of women &/or drug abuse. I am not a huge fan of rap but can [i]literally[b] name at least 5 rap songs that either have nothing to do with abusing women or drugs or that condemn these things off the top of my head.

No explicit language is my only rule.

But I will ban a song or two if I have too.

11-year-old stepdaughter was playing a song about a 12 year beating up a 16-year-old and I had to shut that down.

I listen to rap in the car, so I certainly would not object to my child doing so (he is currently a toddler so does not really have a view!).

Yes. Turn it down. My teens will blasted it when they are taking a shower or in their rooms. I don't mind listening to it if the lyrics are not too explicit. They don't listen to the clean version. I'm old and don't want to hear all the profanity and certainly the ethnic slurs/slang make me cringe.

I hated Tipper Gore and her censoring of music when I was a teen so I won’t do that to my kids. However if younger kids or my mother are in the car we don’t listen to it. I’m not a fan but most of the lyrics aren’t any worse than Some of the stuff I listened to as a teen.

I have a big problem with the misogynistic lyrics.

Same here. I never, ever thought I would like any of it, but my sons made me a bunch of mix tapes, and I find I like at least 50% of the songs. I like a lot of Ray Schrimmer, and I love Kid Cudi's Pursuit of Happiness. Still not getting Lil' Uzi Vert (They think he's amazing), but I'm trying.

How old are you? Was there no rap and hip hop when you were a kid?

Yes, thank you! I'm surprised at how quickly people have forgotten what it's like being a teenager. I used to listen to all sorts of music that Tipper was trying to put an explicit language label on. I was "outraged", LOL, and I'm sure my parents didn't want to listen to Motley Crue at all, but they let me listen to it and never commented on it.

It's interesting how our generation has become more strict than our own parents. Why?
