I called AEI and was told it would take about three and a half hours!! They did say that included directions and breaks.

they told me 4.5 hours!

What?!? These are 5th graders! Don't they care about a developmentally appropriate amount of time for testing?

But the HGC test these kids took was at least 2.5 hours in 3rd grade - they can hack it.

Most schools test on Saturday, Jan 6, but some test in their schools the week after that- January 8-12. I'm pretty sure they said at the parent meeting if you miss the Saturday you can test at your school.

Someone posted about testing before winter break, not sure about that, doesn't sound like many. Maybe there is a special circumstance for that school.

I wonder what the difference is between the Jan 6 group and the in-school group? Critical mass of test-takers? Focus/Title I schools?

What happens after the test? AEI decides who's in and who's not--and decides on which program? No subsequent application review by the school magnet program coordinators and staff?

There's no application to review, just data. AEI and their committee decides all.

I've heard the testers on January 6 are the top candidates, and the in-school testers are from lesser or weaker ES's.

It's not Focus/Title I schools, so I assume its critical mass of test-takers.

The one that the current batch of kids took to get into TP/Eastern was 3.5 hours - so this isn't a surprise, although I thought they said at the meeting in October that the test would be much shorter.

I don't think it's AEI who decides, that's not a very big group of people, it's a pretty small office by MCPS standards. It's a committee of people, including different offices in Central Office. In the past I know teachers and coordinators were involved, not sure if that's changed.

Correction, I was told my kid would be there from 8-12:30 or 9-1:30. So that would include time for administration. Probably 3.5 hours (rather than 4.5) for the test is correct, if you are taking both the Eastern and TP versions.

Cold Spring ES kids will take the test on January 9. The ESC kids in Cold Spring ES are not the top candidates? Or from lesser or weaker ES's?

well....this year MCPS is focused on those without a peer group at their home school....

More seriously, maybe it has to do with how far you'd have to go to take the test?

Doubtful anyone from Cold Spring is getting in - it is generally considered soft on math and weak on writing.
