Middle school magnet testing for Takoma/ Eastern: have you received 'invite'?

Well, that's a pretty impressive turn-around time (if it happens).

Normal 5th graders don't sit around and obsess over magnet programs unless their helicopter parents have made a big deal about it.... I had two conversations with my child.

Me: Are you interested in the magnet program? There is a test you have to take?
Them: Maybe. Will take the test so I have an option.

Day of the test after not mentioning it again!

Me: Have fun in the testing...try to focus and do you best.
Them: Cool

I never encouraged my son to apply to the magnet. It was his choice. Your personal experience does not necessarily apply to everyone-sorry!

Yes, I'll be shocked if it happens on the 9th for Takoma/Eastern.

when the kids look back at the tests, they look like walk in the park comparing how
difficult is every single day at the magnet. They have to think on their feet all the time
and it is high demanding fast paced program so the test seem like a good way
to show the kids what is the magnet about and how well they can handle the
stress, the competition and the emotional and mental demands of performing
on the top level in such conditions.

Parent of both TPMS and EMS magnet students. While both schools are more work than the home school, both schools are also way more interesting than the home school. Both kids found the nagnet way more enjoyable than their friends found the home school. While the pace is faster, it is still too slow for a good chunk of atudents and there are a number of kids with IEP or 504 plans w/ extra time who do fine. Neither kid found the programs super stressful or competitive. If any competition existed it seemed mostly self-generated, i.e. students pushing themselves to be perfect rather than pushing themselves to be better than their peers.

Your description of the magnets as highly competitive and strressful seems a bit over the top to me.

The window closed yesterday, the 19th. They now have all the test results. It's possible.

Do you think they're just going to draw a line in the test results? How do they do any type of meaningful review of written question, "peer group at home school," etc. for the projected 3000 kids in 10-ish days?

Probably all they can look at for "peer group" are test results. That takes little time. Or do you have other things they will likely consider? Also, 3,000 might have been eligible for the test, but at our site they were ready for many more than actually showed. So something less than 3,000 to deal with.

They won't be sifting through 3000 sets of results, automatically they are only looking at the very tippy top. And that is not likely to be a very high number. They only need 100 for each school (so 200) offers and then 50 waitlist for each school (a further 300) so 10% of those who took it in the first place.

^^ I meant a further 100

So, I hear you saying that it boils down to the top 10% of test takers?

It always has.

Are the people from W schools at an advantage in admissions? Seems that we should, since we are in a more rigorous and competitive ES environment that many of the other schools.

I think it is the opposite given one of the stated factors this time around is whether there is a peer group at student's home MS.
Anonymous
I agree with PP - there is more of a peer group at home MS in W zones. It seems like you would have to be more of an outlier on the test.

Was this tweet for for TPMS/Easter or would the results be out for Clemente/MLK as well?
