Thalidomide was never approved for use because a brave woman in the FDA refused to approve it.

Opiates were approved but the use was over prescribed because pharma did not do proper education to the doctors. They lies to doctors.

Exactly. Thank you for speaking the truth.

Doctors bloody well have the education to figure these things out for themselves. Doctors have been very lazy and that has harmed many people.
Doctors (and dentists) should not need some pharma rep with a B.S. in business to explain how a drug affects people.
Pathetic.

You clearly do not know how the medical field works.

DP. Unless you have something substantive to offer, go away.

I agree but I also blame the Sacklers after reading this. There is plenty to go around.

But yes, some doctors are incompetent, indifferent, or just plain crooks. They should have their licenses removed, but there's a culture where doctors will not criticize or police each other for even sheer malpractice. It's sick.

Physicians would rather see patients die than fight this egregious epidemic. Time for them to stop their insane selfishness and laziness.

Please get up off your asses!

REHab centers as long as Obamacare requires coverage. They don’t work except for a small small percent and are a revolving door. Also methafone clinics. Big $$$

Agree. Much as I'd like to have adequate government resources to fight the epidemic, the thought of how much could end up in the hands of scammy rehabs and methadone clinics is truly distasteful.

Just one family in particular: the Sackler billionaires.

Nonsene, Purdue created OxyContin, there is far more the this crisis than OxyContin. It is not "one family".

Do you know that just about every state has a statewide prescription drug monitoring program? That physicians are requiring themselves through their licensing bodies to do regular reviews of patient profiles as well as their own prescribing patterns, to pick up suspicious or worrisome patterns? Do you know that this can be a lengthy process and is uncompensated time?

Do you? I do know that the medical industry LOVES those golfing "conferences" paid for by the Sacklers and their Big Pharma accomplices. -DP

Yes, I do. But you do know the medical industry counts on big pharma to educate them on the use and saftey of the drug. Also ...

"But the F.D.A., in an unusual step, approved a package insert for OxyContin which announced that the drug was safer than rival painkillers, because the patented delayed-absorption mechanism “is believed to reduce the abuse liability.”

Also the FDA doctor that approved Oxycotin went and worked for Purdue.

While there were some doctor's paid to robber baron for Purdue. Most doctors were uninformed because they were given false information that was published on the FDA approved insert.

And it may have indeed been safer than rivals.....when used as prescribed. The only reason OxyContin was so popular among abusers was that high does of oxycodone (compared to Percocet or other generic oxy/acet blends) delayed over 12 hours, became a massive immediate release when crushed.

I can tell you from experience with ortho surgeries, when I took OxyContin twice a day, I took a Percocet once every six hours for 3-4 days. Miiligram to milligram it was less without OxyContin. Same procedure on the other leg 2 endocet 10 every four hours for the same time frame. 60mg vs 120mg, the steady release made a huge difference.

They should be charged with the murder of so many of our loved ones.

No he didn't, he died from multiple formulations of fentanyl and 3 or 4 types of Benzodiazepines. He did not die of OxyContin, moreover he was a heroin addict before OxyContin was even invented.

Considering the "epidemic" status of these drugs and the deceased victims, your so-called drug monitoring program has been an abysmal failure.

Do you understand how many lives are taken every. single. day. by these addictive opioids?

Yes.

No. That's like saying the banks are filled with money so we should expect an epidemic of armed robberies. Purdue Pharma, owned by the Sacklers, led a sophisticated marketing campaign to target pharmacies, doctors and patients and get them started on a drug ( first month supply coupons) they knew was highly addictive. They pled guilty to fraud and paid the government a fine that consists of less than three cents on every dollar of profit they made. Three execs got off with misdemeanor charges. Thousands have died. Families have been destroyed and a street opiate trade was kicked off. Sacklers need to do time (but won't). The company needs to be bled white for what they did. Every museum and university that bears the Sackler name should remove that name.

This current crisis is not due to the OxyContin debacle. It just picked up speed since then. I don't disagree Perdue needs to be hammered.

Nonsense, were Doctors prescribing cocaine and heroin during the 70' and 80's? People like to get high and will get it anyway they can.

How America’s opioid epidemic began
"The opioid epidemic began in the 1990s, when doctors became increasingly aware of the burdens of pain. Pharmaceutical companies saw an opportunity, and pushed doctors — with misleading marketing about the safety and efficacy of the drugs — to prescribe opioids to treat all sorts of pain. Doctors, many exhausted by dealing with difficult-to-treat pain patients, complied — in some states, writing enough prescriptions to fill a bottle of pills for each resident."

Much more in the article.

Wow. Just wow.

How long have these programs been in effect, state by state?

Do you know?

Do you know why they were created?
