Gang Activity in Montgomery County Shcools?

Anonymous
Lived in a Red Zone long enough to see the pattern. Red Zone schools are more likely to have issues than other schools (generally). Any school can have issues, the question is how frequent or how common. Worry more if your school has a police car posted in the morning or after school. Worry less if it doesn't.

If you're still using 15-year-old red-zone and green-zone language, your experience with schools is no longer relevant.

Watkins Mill High School is probably the most challenged school in the county with respect to gang activity.

You can call your local police district station and ask. You can also ask to talk to the School Resource Officer for whatever school you are interested in.

As far as the DCC, my friend's daughter just graduated from Wheaton High and had a great experience. She was not in all honors or AP classes. She was involved in drama and acting. No issues with violence/drugs/threats/etc.

DS just started Churchill and we are quite pleased no gangs, drugs or drinking issues so far. We don't allow those activities in our house.

Frankly, unless there is some specific academic interest that isn't being met by your neighborhood high school, I can't see hauling my kids somewhere else. It's not just the drive to and from school, but all their friends live elsewhere, after school activities, sports, etc. And remember, once they get their drivers licenses, you are going to have these rookie drivers making these trips on their own for a few years.

All area high schools offer the same things.

- signed parent with 2 kids at out of bounds schools

Not really. The Blair magnet is not replicated elsewhere.

You really think there are no drinking and drug issues at Churchill. Maybe not for freshman but there is a huge amount, especially when those kids have easy access to money.

Well, if you won't allow it, that settles things. I have never heard of a HS student breaking rules. And your kid is a few weeks into freshman year; I wouldn't declare victory quite yet.

which is driven into the schools by the gangs.

this is much bigger than a few kids saying they are a gang.

LOL no. Kids with money, opportunity, and privilege do not get drugs "driven" into them by gangs. Even back in the olden days when I went to MCPS, my school was 90% white, no gangs, and plennnnnnty of drugs.

Why are you sending your kid to a downcountry school? It makes no sense if you don't live in the area.

They are in a down County gifted and talented program so they get the choice of a county or down County . Makes complete sense it's Montgomery county's policy
