How much does your 3rd grade boy weigh?

That's not super skinny. In fact, it's above average for an 8 year old: http://www.livestrong.com/article/328220-the-average-height-and-weight-by-age/

My super skinny 3rd grade boy weighs 46 pounds.

Why do you care what other people's kids weigh anyway?

My 8 y old is 56" and 80 lbs. my 5 y old is 47" and 50 lbs!

Are you worried about their weight?

Why should she be?

Because they are obese.

50lbs is obese for a 47" child?? It's perfect - absolutely proportional. I can't quite visualize 80lbs on 56" but it doesn't ring as obese. Man, what a jerk.

I am not defending calling a child obese at that weight, but my son is 48 inches and 52 pounds, and his doctor suggested we keep an eye on his intake of sweets. The issue is not that he is obese- he isn't. The issue is that his percentile height is much less than his percentile weight.

My 3rd grade boy who turned 8 over the summer is 48" tall and weighs 48 lbs. He's pretty small, but so darn cute! Hoping he will hit a growth spurt but he's healthy so we are all good! Its nice to see some other kids his age here are about the same size

While I agree that OP should not care what other kids weigh, I am fascinated that you can opine that her son is not super skinny when you have no idea how tall he is. What if he is 5' tall? Would that not be super skinny??

My 7 year old 2nd grader is darn thin. He's 57lbs and something like 54 inches tall. It seems like he doesn't gain any weight but doing a gluten free diet (not by choice) does that to you. When he's naked, it appears he's not getting enough to eat. You can see ribs and no meat. But, if you see him eat, you would be amaze at where they put the food. He has never eaten kid size anything in restaurants. It's always a regular entrée size (also cause there are no gluten free kid size anything).

He's the same size as some of his 3rd grader friends.

Seriously. My K boy about to be 6 is also 47" and 49 pounds. He's really th

A kid who is 56" (4'8") & 80lbs isn't even overweight, never mind obese. 80lbs is probably quite a bit more than most third graders weigh but this kid is also quite a bit taller than most third graders.

a kid with this build is in the 85th percentile according to a BMI calculator. Not obese, but getting up there/on the boarder. However, with BMI body composition HAS to also be taken into account. Many bodybuilder would be considered obese by their BMI measurements as would people of certain ethnic backgrounds who have higher muscle mass. So BMI alone does not accurately determine obesity, it's just a screening tool.

These are my kids- they are both over the charts in height and they aren't skinny kids but athletic, muscular and not fat.

He is quite thin and can only wear slim clothes (thank goodness for Land's End

He is taller and lighter than most of his friends, even the shorter ones.

Am 80lb third grader? That's obese.

Not necessarily...could just be a kid who is going to hit puberty early. I was 80 pounds in 3rd grade, and already 5 feet tall. Definitely was not obese...could barely find pants that would stay up.

My daughter was around 80 pounds in 3rd grade-she got her period at 10 and is now a 5'7 6th grader. Was never obese.

At 80 lbs he is definitely not obese, he is very tall for 3rd grade and his dr estimated he could grow to be at least 6'-4" tall.

How is that possible? How tall is she?

Totally possible! I was the tallest girl in my kindergarten class, and I remember weighing 50 pounds. As an adult, I am 5'9" and 127 pounds.

I haven't checked recently (I did check her weight recently) - she was 48 inches in May ...her dresses are shorter now so I think she's prob 49.5 inches - she's extremely tall! Tallest kid in her class by far ...
