Are you worried about their weight?

Why should she be?

Because they are obese.

50lbs is obese for a 47" child?? It's perfect - absolutely proportional. I can't quite visualize 80lbs on 56" but it doesn't ring as obese. Man, what a jerk.

I am not defending calling a child obese at that weight, but my son is 48 inches and 52 pounds, and his doctor suggested we keep an eye on his intake of sweets. The issue is not that he is obese- he isn't. The issue is that his percentile height is much less than his percentile weight.

your doctor is insane. yes, your child's weight is higher than height but not by much at all.

My 6 year old is 49 inches and weights about 56 pounds. He is built like a linebacker - wide across the chest, muscular and solid. I would laugh in my doctor's face if she told me I needed to "keep an eye" on any of his food.

How is that possible? How tall is she?

Totally possible! I was the tallest girl in my kindergarten class, and I remember weighing 50 pounds. As an adult, I am 5'9" and 127 pounds.

I haven't checked recently (I did check her weight recently) - she was 48 inches in May ...her dresses are shorter now so I think she's prob 49.5 inches - she's extremely tall! Tallest kid in her class by far ...

My 5 year old girl also weighs 52 pounds. She's not obese.

Mom of the tall and 54 lb k girl above ... I did have one ped who commented when looking at the chart that her weight was high for her height - then she turned around from her computer and looked at my daughter and said "uh never mind" - I think the moral of the story is numbers don't tell you enough neither does BMI - you need to actually look at the kid and see if they are fat or muscular - big boned or small boned etc

You either can't do math or you have an eating disorder. Do you know how tall 56 inches is? My eight year old is about the same height and weight and she is literally skin and bones.

There's some serious denial going on in this thread. Six year olds are not muscular. They cannot be built like line backers. If someone says that to you it is code for fat.

Have you seen the PP's child?

Mine is too! The doctors are not concerned about his weight and neither am I. Not everyone is built the same and there is no denial on my part. In my sons class there are tiny, skinny kids, there are tall lanky kids and every shape.

I've seen kids described as "line backers". It's code for overweight our obese. Every time.

I definitely think some kids have bigger builds/frames than others.

Well, according to the medical charts at his doctor's office, he is 15th percentile height and 40th weight, so yes, that is a considerable difference. Again, nothing to obsessively worry about, but I agree that we should keep an eye on his intake of sweets and purchase of chocolate milk at school.

So you haven't seen the PP's child, but nonetheless you believe that you know more about the PP's child than the PP.

That seems really immature. If you don't trust your child's doctor's advice enough to take it seriously, you need to find a new doctor for him.
