Anyone Here NOT Make $100K (yet)?

Anonymous
I make 85k at 29 as a fed contractor. My job sucks but at least I never have to work extra hours or think about work on the weekends. I'm looking for new jobs now and I *think* I can get pretty close to, if not 100k this next move.

HHI at my house is 220k both right near 110 doesnt seem like a lot compared to some around here, but we will retire pretty comfortably before we hit 60. Just over 10 years left pensions, ss, 401's will equal 17K each month.

^ 17 monthly when we are in our 60s

What possessed you to post in this thread since OP is asking for those who do NOT make $100K?

DH is also 35, not a lawyer, and makes $80,000.

I love my government job.

Do you? I'm so bored.

Yes, I have periods of high stress and periods that are pretty low-stress and it's mostly interesting and a mix of litigation and advice matters. I'm in State govt, not federal, if that matters?

But would like to mention that I wish I was paid a little more. Getting raises in state govt seems impossible unless you switch roles. We never get COLAs or step increases! That can be really frustrating, but I am reluctant to give up the things I do like about my job-- the work, my colleagues, work/life balance, just for more money.

Well, it probably doesn't help that we're at a standstill due to a delay in confirmations. Not to mention it's mostly regulatory. But the salary, pension and benefits are good, so can't complain. But I'm bored. . .

93K. I'm 38. DH is the breadwinner, but we use my health plan, and my 401k match is much better.

Guess there are always trade-offs.

I don't and likely never will. I make 70K at a non-profit, and I'm 38. I work from home every day, never work after 4 pm or on the weekends, love my colleagues, and work from a distance (DC-based organization but I moved away and could keep my job). I have total autonomy and earn a ton of leave. All those benefits outweigh whatever disadvantages there could be with the salary.

Truth. And the grass is always greener? I thought fed lawyers made so much more money than me? But if you're posting on this thread, I guess not?

Sorry, I think we do. I didn't post here, except in response to you loving your gov't job. Attorneys at our agency start at GS-10/11 out of law school and can "quickly" move up to GS-15 if they meet certain performance standards, etc. Most attorneys coming in from outside seem to start at GS-14/15.

DH is 36 and makes $65k a year and is a lawyer. But he's in a public service job and loves what he does. He also only works 40 hours a week (although in an office).

What do you do?

I'm an analyst / internal control reviewer for a consulting group. Kind of a weird role, can be boring at times, and little room for advancement but the flexibility is so great, it's hard to imagine giving it up.

If you're making under $100k, how are you affording to fly first-class?

By using the money I made before I became a Fed.
