Tell me about Boston College

It is Jesuit but very diverse and has an accepting culture. I think it is at least 25% Hispanic and 25% Asian. The school just received the second largest donation to a Catholic school of 100 million dollars from the Sobratos to develop a new STEM center. The Sobratos who developed a lot of Silicon Valley including the Apple Campus have donated more money in the past. The undergrad population is about 5500 with plans to expand to 6000. It is a university but feels more like a LAC with small classes. A gem!

Classic statement by gigantic ignoramus.

The Jesuits by definition, are diverse and accepting.

Listen Rude! I wrote that because some people hear that a school is Jesuit and run in the other direction. I was trying to be positive.

Such a stupid statement. You could insert any other religion/culture/race in your offensive statement and it would be equally offensive. The truth is we are all the same.

BC is a good school, OP. It really is. I did a grad degree there, but I am very happy that my kid attends BC now.

(I am not thrilled by the expensive hovel where he will live in Cleveland Circle next year, but that's another story).

Boston is my favorite city in the world.
BC grad here...the one who wrote the long post above.

I was pretty shocked by how bad some of the off-campus apartments were and by how high the rents were. It's definitely nicer to live in the campus apartments, though that obviously comes with some extra scrutiny!

OP here. This was a very helpful post. Thank you!

What's it like for a Jewish person?

Why would a Jew want to go to BC? Why would a catholic want to go to yeshiva or Brandeis?

There was a pretty famous Catholic chaplain at Brandeis ( Fr. Cuenin, defrocked for ministering to the LGBT community), just so you know. He only recently left for health reasons.

The Jewish population is small at BC, but the surrounding community has a pretty good Jewish population. If you are going to Boston to tour schools, consider reaching out to BC's Hillel students and see if you can meet up with someone for a cup of coffee.

How does BC compare with Villanova?

Notre Dame #15

Boston College #31

Holy Cross is a LAC and ranked 32 among that group.

Where would you put them without us news rankings? What about Villanova?

I'd rather go to BC over both ND or GU. Boston is an incredible college town.

I have one DC there. Loves it. Do you have a specific question, or do you just want to obsess about rankings?

No one has said anything to describe Boston College yet and we’re almost to 5 pages...

BC is a solid school academically but it's always seemed very bland to me. It really isn't known for anything in particular and lacks personality. The student body is fairly homogenous which is either good or bad depending on what your DC is looking for. I went to Tufts and we would often go visit friends at Harvard, MIT, Wellesley and other colleges in the area but never BC. I'm a sample of one so take that with a grain of salt but the BC kids seemed to stick to themselves.

The campus is beautiful. One thing to know is about 1/3 of first years are housed in a dorm that is a bus ride away from campus. For some this can feel isolating. I imagine if you find a group you like in that dorm, it could be nice but if not it can feel a bit like being left out.

Then you are pretty dumb. And BC's not in Boston.

I was waiting for this to come up. I lived on Upper and my brother lived on Newton. Newton freshman are more closely bonded than Upper and College Road freshmen. The shuttle isn't great, but it's not as long of a ride as the one people who go to massive universities have to take. Not that this is major, but the Newton dining hall is smaller and that makes it a little better.

I definitely think my brother would have done well regardless, but some people who want a smaller community within a school, Newton is a nice option.
