Tell me about Boston College

Who's the "they" who used to call it that? I've never, ever heard that despite growing up within walking distance of BC

I'd say that as a local, we all hated the football traffic and speeding young drivers, but it's a great school and a great place to live.

+1.

People in the Boston area typically think very highly of Boston College.

My DD is a top student from a Catholic high school (top grades, high test scores, good kid) and she didn't like Notre Dame at all. She would likely get a scholarship but she won't even apply. One persons trash is another's treasure I suppose.

There's no diversity there and the 'not white people' who are there are uncomfortable.
Lots of money, football with Jesus at the end zones, white people everyone all mixed up with prayer and mass apparently isn't everyone's idea of a college Mecca.

I've always heard good things about Boston College. Not sure why it's being so trashed here.

If your dc liked BC check out Santa Clara University in Silicon Valley. It has a stunningly beautiful campus. It has very strong business and engineering programs. It is Jesuit but very diverse and has an accepting culture. I think it is at least 25% Hispanic and 25% Asian. The school just received the second largest donation to a Catholic school of 100 million dollars from the Sobratos to develop a new STEM center. The Sobratos who developed a lot of Silicon Valley including the Apple Campus have donated more money in the past. The undergrad population is about 5500 with plans to expand to 6000. It is a university but feels more like a LAC with small classes. A gem!

Lots of people like to repeat opinions they've heard or opinions based on less-than-firsthand info.

Boston College is a wonderful school. That said, like most colleges you can make it a good experience and stretch yourself, or you can take the low road and do only the minimal amount required. It certainly has become more selective but I think many schools have.

I have a degrees from Harvard and Boston College, so I think I'm able to provide an informed comparison.

BC is a good school, OP. It really is. I did a grad degree there, but I am very happy that my kid attends BC now.

(I am not thrilled by the expensive hovel where he will live in Cleveland Circle next year, but that's another story).

Boston is my favorite city in the world.

I'm a "not white person" who graduated from ND and I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Is it the most diverse school? No. It has more than you'd imagine though.

BC grad here...the one who wrote the long post above.

I was pretty shocked by how bad some of the off-campus apartments were and by how high the rents were. It's definitely nicer to live in the campus apartments, though that obviously comes with some extra scrutiny!
