Do you pack an ice pack in your child's lunch?

Anonymous
Never.

FWIW I bring lunch to work every day, usually leftovers including meat, I never put an ice pack or even refrigerate it. I leave the house at 7am and eat lunch between 12 and 1. Shocking that I am still alive.

I don't pack an ice pack during the school year - their lunches are in a Yumbox, inside of an insulated bag, inside of their cool, dark locker. When they go to summer camp, and the lunch is outside, I pack an ice pack.

yuck. would you want to eat a sandwich with cheese and lunch meat under those conditions? I would NOT. Put an effing ice pack in there. It takes 2 seconds.

Do you. Some people don't like ice cold food. I don't like cold sandwiches, and neither do my kids. The PB&J that I pack 99% of the time doesn't need an ice pack.

I'm amused that the "ice packers" are acting like the people that don't put ice packs in lunches are putting arsenic in lunches. It's not about the "2 seconds" of effort. It's not necessary.

Yes - I put an ice pack in the lunchbox.

+1. Going on 13 years of doing this. I only refrigerate tuna salad because I prefer it cold. I have forgotten and eaten it room temp and never died or gotten sick...

Only when they are in an outdoor camp in summer. Otherwise, nope.

How stupid are you that you think this is actually necessary?

and honest question here, did any of us every have an ice pack in our lunches growing up? seriously? I always just had a brown paper bag.

I do put an ice pack in for summer camp or a field trip where I know the food is going to be outside. We use these because they're pretty slim and light and I can use one or two depending on how much cooling power I think we need:

You are right- I had no ice pack but my mom sent in bologna and mayo sandwiches. SO GROSS. Ew.

so why do we feel it is so necessary now? I brought various lunches to school (tuna, ham, turkey) and nothing was refrigerated. We all lived. These days we are scared of everything.

And I am the above poster who never refrigerates my lunch including yogurt. Never been sick. I can understand a cold pack if you prefer things cold, but from a safety standpoint, there is no point.

I don't know why "we" feel that way , but in my case I hated warm meat lunches and my kids do too. I don't send an ice pack if it is just fruit, pb&j or if I packed a thermos.

No, never. This is another ridiculous helicopter trend.

You know in Europe they keep mayo out all the time.

Why would you feed your kid mayo?

Anonymous wrote:OP here. Thanks for the input. I usually only pack an ice pack when I pack yogurt but maybe I will start with sandwiches now. I use plastic bento-type boxes to pack their lunches so ice packs are a bit awkward as the box fills up most of the space in their lunch boxes. But I'm sure there is a way to fit it in.

No, don't give into the pressure. If your kids don't care that their food is cold then don't bother.
