Nancy Van Doren just went off the deep end

Anyone want to post that to Arlington Education Matters?

I'm really tempted.

I'm not on FB but this makes me want to sign up. Here are two School Board policies, one dealing with conduct which she clearly violated. She needs to be publicly called out for her behavior. I want to go speak at the SB session, but have too many issues that I care about and want the SB to vote in a given direction that it's risky. If you're willing to, please do.

Wish someone would also alert ArlNow, they love this sh*t.

I think there's enough flow between DCUM and AEM that people who want to know will know.

I am so sad that Greg Greeley wasn't elected. Fuck you, New Stratford Middle School parents.

I just watched. Unreal. I thought PP might be exaggerating. Nope. What hideous behavior.

I haven't paid much attention to School Board members and have even met Nancy before and found her to be pretty normal. Her snide comment it pretty outrageous, but her comments about twins are just wacko. We have twins in my family, and they are perfectly functional individuals. Maybe her twins have other (pyschological or developmental?) issues she is conflating with their "twin-ness"?? Good grief, she owes her constituents and especially Reid Goldstein an apology for her behavior last night.

What a shame. She used to be great, and she did a wonderful job with the TJ Renovations years ago.

Done properly, changing the rules for twins should have no impact on admissions probabilities for the rest of us.

This wouldn't be a change in admissions probabilities, in any case. It's a question of whether the current policy for secondary school programs should be changed to treat multiples (biological multiples, I guess, not same-grade siblings) as individuals.

NVD served on the group that chose Murphy, and she will not tolerate any actions that reflect a belief that he was a bad choice. Similarly, she thinks whatever success she was responsible for TJ's renovations makes her qualified to deal with any facilities issues for APS as a whole.

And tag her since she's a member of the group.

I'm speculating- but I am guessing that she is super offended by the fact that the staff (appropriately) changed the definition of twins away from biology. She clearly falls into the camp that thinks that her twins are special b/c they were in the womb together, and that somehow anyone who has same grade siblings who are not biological twins is an inappropriate family.
Of course, saying this would be very un-PC.
She wants twins to have high school preference too- fine. I don't really agree with her but I don't view it as a huge issue. She was trying to rally support. Ms. Talento agreed with her- but Talento's example and reason for agreement was blended families- aka same grade siblings who are not biological twins.
I'm guessing that Talento's example fueled her emotional outburst- she couldn't attack Talento b/c Talento was the only one agreeing with her, but in fact she was saying something that she hates.

Wouldn't be a bad idea if a few people sent an email to the School Board, and/or to Nancy directly, letting her know how appalled we are and suggesting a public apology to Reid.

This is so true- how many parents voted in the last SB caucus? Answer: Not very many. The only people who show up regularly to the caucuses are a bunch of Arlington Dem Committee political hacks and the retirees. We're stuck with NVD for now, but we can get rid of Lander next month and he almost always backs her up. Even if you are undecided about Maura vs. Monique, make sure to write them in as #1 and #2 on your ballot. Leave Lander off completely-- you don't need to pick a #3. That helps to ensure that either Maura or Monique get elected in the event that none of the candidates get 50% of the #1 votes in the first round.

I'm one of the many guilty parents who has not voted in previous SB caucuses. I'll be voting this time. Thanks for the advice to leave Lander off the ballot entirely. Even if we can't unseat him, the more people who show up and vote against him the more likely we are to send a message to the entire School Board. We're watching.

I really can't belive that some of the SB members are so dismissive of the Kenmore option.

How about a letter to the editor of the Sun Gazette asking for an apology from NVD (to APS staff, the SB, and the public), and asking that she remain civil and represent her constituents rather than her personal interests? I would sign on.

Or posting it on Facebook could also be wonderful.

I don't understand how the almost exclusive focus of the SB now is not on ensuring the county has a fourth comprehensive neighborhood high school ready in a few years. Not some additional, lame choice school that gets shoved down the throats of quirky kids, or a 1300-student school that is so obviously "less than" the existing schools.

How did this county squander its advantages so quickly? What a bunch of imbeciles.
