5 year old killed in rotating restaurant-caught between floor and wall

People love to blame the parents because it makes them feel like this kind of accident could NEVER happen to their kids because they are GOOD and CAREFUL with their kids.

I would be scared to engage in that myself because karma's a bitch.

I imagine that the kid probably thought it was cool that the restaurant rotated and put his head close to the gap to see how it worked.

Those restaurants have been around and delighted patrons since the 70's. First time I have heard of anyone being injured, let alone killed. A freak accident and now there will be an overreaction and probably closures.

Why wasn't the nanny watching the kid. If we don't have our Nanny the children stay in their seat.

But for this to have been such a rare occurrence, with the restaurant operating as normally... the parents are at fault.

That does NOT mean that the parents willed it to happen - but it is what it is - a tragic accidental accident.

YOU are responsible for your kids. The world cannot be fully equipped to prevent every single freak accident. If your kids cannot obey the rules and behave at a restaurant, then don't take them to one.

What rules? What misbehavior? The article said nothing of the kind. And to say you know it is the parents' fault because it never happened before is dumb. Maybe it never happened before because there is a faulty safety mechanism. Maybe it never happened before because the floor is in need of repair.

I just don't understand you people.

Same hotel had a 10 year ild boy drown in their swimming pool at a party lat year and a 61 year old female kitchen worker get killed while locked in a walk in freezer-sounds like a place to avoid...

Parents should have been next to the child. It was faulty equipment as there should have been a shut off sensor for emergencies BUT, kid went or fell where they should not have been. Kids should not be walking even to look alone. Agree with PP. Parents need to supervise and if your child cannot sit, they don't go.

Given that the restaurant has been around forever, hard to see how they are at fault.

All walk-in freezers have emergency proc fired and can be opened from inside.

I seriously cannot believe anyone is blaming the parents here. Ya'll are fucking cruel.

This one apparently did not. Or it was not working properly

PP, every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning:
https://www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/water-safety/waterinjuries-factsheet.html

The hotel worker who died, "was among a handful of workers who, in the last 15 years, were found dead in freezers, federal records show..."
https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2016-10-30/trapped-deaths-inside-freezers-can-be-prevented-but-how

Life is not without risk nor tragedy.

That doesn't seem clear from reading about the incident. After the death, they tested the button over and over again, and it worked every time.

It happened here in Potomac, MD a couple years ago. Mother backing out of driveway and didn't see daughter who ran out.

This is why back-up cameras will be mandatory in all vehicles in the US starting next year.

There are constantly incidents about this. The car I want doesn't come with a camera as an option so I'm waiting till 2018 where it is required. No way I'd buy another car without one.

This accident happened when he was going forward, not reverse.
