5 year old killed in rotating restaurant-caught between floor and wall

This isn't anyone's fault. It is just a horrible, tragic accident. There are so many times that over my years raising three children that something tragic could have happened - losing sight of a child for just 5 seconds at the playground, etc.. I do everything in my power to keep my kids safe, but I know that so much of it is just luck and I'm so grateful that at this moment my kids are safe and healthy.

I seriously don't understand the people acting like it is the parents' fault for not supervising. My kids don't "wander" in a restaurant but not because I am convinced that there is a fatal crushing hazard everywhere we go.

It was a rotating restaurant! The whole point is to look out the window! He probably said "Can I go look out the window?" And the parents probably glanced over at the nearby unoccupied area and said "Sure." Unless there were guardrails and warning signs, the restaurant is definitely at fault.

Also want to say: the most despicable thing about the article comments are the people blaming the parents in the most self satisfied way, and then saying "Prayers to all!". Like, I'm going to judge the shit out of you and pat myself on the back but then mention G-D so everyone knows how doubly awesome I am. Sickening.

I feel sorry for the parents. Their guard was down, who would expect danger in this situation? That poor child.

I agree, and I read that this family were the only customers left in the restaurant at the time as the much session was over-they were likely finishing up and thought kid looking out the window 5 feet away was no big deal. I doubt they could have ever anticipated that he would be crushed to death by the faulty design of the restaurant. I totally place complete fault on the Westin/Sun Dial.

lunch session-not much session

I have two kids. They have never been allowed to get up and walk around at a restaurant. You sit at the table and eat your meal and chat with your companions. If kids are small they can color or look at a book. Restaurants are not playgrounds. Parents are 100% at fault here.

Im sick and tired of seeing and hearing about kids being hurt or killed because of their stupid, overly permissive, incapable parents.

Here is a restaurant like this in a hotel in Pentagon City. I don't understand if the kid wasn't crawling on the floor how he could have gotten caught. I read that the family was the absolute last patrons of the lunch service and no other patrons were in the dining room. I speculate the parents were wrapping up paying the bill, and getting up, etc and the child walked over to look at the view. I don't envision the child running loose and the parents sippping wine not giving a shit.

It seems to be a freak accident. If the rotation automatically shuts but it took 30+ minutes to free him his head injury must have been from the pressure. That is just horrible.

As someone who has worked in many types of restaurants when I was young, there are several kinds of hazards for children and I highly stress not permitting your children to leave the table without you; such as: falling over things, bumping into servers, having hot food and drinks spilled on you when you bump into a server, getting hit in the face with a door, getting your fingers smashed in a door, bumping into another table and spilling their food, falling because floors can be slippery, etc. I don't think in this situation the child was using the restaurant as a playground but let the story to be a reminder that there are many hazards in restaurants

+1 million. Everyone looking to place blame anywhere other than with the faulty design of the restaurant should be ashamed of themselves.

And that means you, 12:29. You are an awful, hateful sanctimommy who appears to relish piling on in a moment of tragedy.

What a horrible tragedy. I hate how everyone in the comments ids blaming the parents-the appears to be a freak accident.

It was the parents fault. Watch your children and stop allowing them to wander around. Restaurants, stores are not places for exploring. No one to blame but lazy parents

I hope they don't because the parents should have been watching their child. No excuse but it is their fault not the restaurants.

I agree that the parents are at fault. That doesn't mean that the parents were deliberately hoping their child got killed - not at all. It's a sad, unintentional accident. But for this to have been such a rare occurrence, with the restaurant operating as normally... the parents are at fault.

That does NOT mean that the parents willed it to happen - but it is what it is - a tragic accidental accident.

YOU are responsible for your kids. The world cannot be fully equipped to prevent every single freak accident. If your kids cannot obey the rules and behave at a restaurant, then don't take them to one.

The kid may have tripped and fallen and his head got pinned. A child's head could get wedged in a 5 inch opening. I don't blame the parents at all. People love to blame the parents because it makes them feel like this kind of accident could NEVER happen to their kids because they are GOOD and CAREFUL with their kids.

I would be scared to engage in that myself because karma's a bitch.

If they didn't allow young kids parents would be screaming discrimination and shaming the restaurant on Facebook.

Definitely sad but ultimately parents need to be supervising. Thousands of people including kids have been there and been fine.
