Cool, I'll pull that card and double park wherever I want next time I go to Rose's Luxury, since my parents and grandparents grew up in that neighborhood. |
You literally argued earlier that they had some right to illegally park because their grandma still lives in the neighborhood (which, if true, means grandma can apply for a visitor parking pass and they can park legally, elsewhere). |
What would you say if someone from a different era, i.e., before restrictive covenants were struck down as unconstitutional, saying that these grandparents can't be there because of that tradition of whiteness? That it's really white people's neighborhood? It's the same level of ridiculousness as your argument about legacy ownership and holds no water. |
Okay, great. I'll go park in the hospital parking lot for free, because my family used to own and occupy the land it now sits on. It will always be "my" neighborhood, because I have a family history there. The hospital owners and employees do not. |
Too much white privilege to understand. |

Reality
Some black churches exercise a lot of political power in DC, because A. They still have some DC members, or their Md members have DC relations B. Some Md folks donate to pols C. Lots of AA residents in DC unconnected to particular churches can be swayed by arguments like PP's. D. Some can make a case for their importance as social service providers But - over time, those mostly elderly "left behind grandmas"will pass away. Even the Md residents will consist more and more of folks who grew up in Md, with no connection to the old neighborhood, instead of folks who grew up in DC. Ward 9 will change. And most churches will respond to their moving congregations, and to the RE market. Some are building mixed use edifices that will incorporate a church. But many (I can think of three off the top of my head - one in Navy Yard, one near H Street, and one in Columbia Heights) simply move on. So over time this will become a smaller issue. Meanwhile, it is what it is. |

this. Its an unspoken but consistent rule. Just don't block a fire hydrant. We don't go to church and park anywhere on sundays. way past the parking signs. |

I grew up in Massachusetts, where my family moved in 1620. All of my extended family still lives there, and even though I haven't been in resident in almost 30 years I still read the hometown paper online and root for the local sports teams.
I wouldn't in a million years dream of telling an actual Massachusetts resident -- even a newcomer -- that I somehow have a greater voice in local affairs than I do. That newcomer lives there, I don't. |
a greater voice in local affairs than he does |
As an original colonizer, of course you wouldn't understand. Pilgrims. Glad your ancestors had a choice. |
You must be new here. |
