| I was 13 when I got my period and was a FAT kid. |
| I think it's right in time bc the first period is usually 2 years after the first sign of puberty. So if 12 is average for menarche, then 10 is average. |
She is completely normal, at her next check up the nurse will probably talk to her about puberty. Have you talked to her about periods yet? Now might be a good time. Perhaps start weening her off toys now, by 11 they are getting too old for toys. Be grateful she is not moody yet, some 10yr olds can be right moody monsters lol. |
Yes after starting puberty I had to wait two long years for my period to start at 11.6. I was anxious for them to start and i wanted to be a "woman" I kept asking my mom when they would start. After the third one I wished I had never started them. Just a bit of info, about five months before starting my periods I started getting discharge so you might want to check her laundry now and again get her some panty liners so she is prepared. XX. |
| I was 13 when I got mine and felt like I was the absolute last one in the class. My mother had gotten hers at 11 or 12. I think seeing signs of puberty at 10 in a girl is totally on track. She may not start her period for another two years. |
I'm 46 years old and got my period in 4th grade. So, its not like it didn't happen. And my friends were not that far behind me. |
If she still enjoys toys, let her play with toys! Kids groe up fast enough as it is! FWW, my childhood best friend & I played with dolls occasionally until the end of seventh grade. We had also been babysitting for well over a year by that point & were very mature & responsible 99% of the time. We just liked dolls! I'm glad our parents let us hold on to that little bit of childhood instead of "weaning us off of" it before we were ready. |
Seriously- my dd is 10 and will get her period any day. She loves barbies and toys, and being a little girl- don't listen to the PP above that says to wean off toys. They are kids! |
Yep, my mom (who is 68) had a good friend growing up who got her period at 9.The average age of menarche is getting earlier but there have always been girls who were early (& late) bloomers! I remember learning in health class back in the late 80s that anywhere from age 9 to age 16 was considered normal for a first period. |
Check your reading comprehension. Nobody is disputing that the average age of menarche has dropped. We are, however, saying that it has always been well within the range of normal for a girl to get her first period at 11. |
| Chubby girls enter menarche earlier, for the most part. |
All of this. I got my period at 12.5. I also actively played make believe games up until that year as well. I'm 31 and still in touch with friends from middle school and we talk with bittersweetness of the day we couldn't pretend anymore. Let your daughter be little as long as she can. I knew all about puberty and was also a responsible and sought after babysitter by 6th grade. Maturity and prolonged childhood joy can go hand in hand. My teenage nieces outgrew toys by age 7 or 8 and turned to making up dances and watching YouTube. I desperately hope my daughter plays with toys and her imagination right into middle school. |
I don't remember when I started getting armpit hair, but I clearly remember breast buds at age 10 (5th grade), because I remember working hard to hide them, LOL. I didn't get my period until a few weeks before my 14th birthday. |
Just a reminder: Judy Blume wrote "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" in 1970. In the book, Margaret has just turned 12 and is in the 6th grade and worries that she will be the last one in her class to get her period.

Chubby girls may enter menarche earlier than they would if they were slim but genetics plays a huge role. Also, a girl may be chubbier than her peers because she had entered puberty & they haven't, not the othe way around. |
