Is 10 early for signs of puberty in girls?

Anonymous
DD turned 10 in November and is in 4th grade.
Somehow I just noticed tonight that she
is showing some common signs of puberty.

In all other ways she's a typical little girl and actually is late to give up her barbies, beanie-boos and stuffed animals.
Also, I haven't noticed any of the hormonal moodiness yet. But physically, there are some changes and I'm wondering if this is a concern or if it's just the earlier side of normal? She's got a check-up coming up but wondering what others have experienced in terms of the age at the start of puberty.
I'm hoping that her menstrual cycle holds off until she is more mature.

OP,
Some girls start menstruating at 9 or 10, and that's after physical changes in form.
So your daughter might have another couple of years before her first period, which put her right in the middle of the pack.

I think 10 is perfectly normal. DD is in 5th grade and I would say the majority of the girls are going through puberty.

There's a reason that American Girl has a bestselling book about puberty in a store full of dolls. Girls are hitting puberty younger, many while they still love playing with dolls and stuffed animals. 10 is not so young these days.

+1

10.5 is apparently the average age.

I was 11 when I started my period so I'm expecting about the same or earlier for my DD. My niece is 9 and she already had her first period a month ago.

My daughter was 10.5 and almost exactly halfway through 5th grade when she got her period. It was so hard on her at first, as she felt pretty physically overwhelmed. She cried a lot, said she just wanted to be a kid longer.

I just listened. Hugged her a lot. It was a rollercoaster of emotions for awhile, including anger and irritability. Just be as supportive as you can.

I would be concerned if my DD got her period at 10. That is too early in my mind. But, things are changing and girls are entering puberty earlier and earlier. Just love your daughter and tell her it is normal.

My daughters 10, she started puberty about 5-6 months ago. She called me into the shower to tell me she was getting hair down there?. Inside my heart sank but I calmly told her she was at the age when these things begin. She has not started her periods but lately her breasts have grown rapidly.

I'm 40, started my period just before I turned 11 (ie. I was still 10) and was hardly the first girl in my group to get it. This is nit an example of "earlier and earlier". This is an example of normal.

Nothing like DCUM to illustrate ignorance.

It was NOT normal back when you were 11. Puberty is coming earlier and earlier for girls now. And it's worrisome to scientists.

This article helped me. My daughter started at age 11, which seemed young to me (I was 13) but turns out she--and your daughter--are right on time.

I got mine when I was 11. My mom was 10 when she got her first period. We weren't overweight at all.
