Think of Fairlington Village, but with (1) new single-family homes on small lots and townhouses near a retail center and (2) decent public schools.

NP. What's Fairlingyon Village?

It is much like Fairlington Village, but without the 't'. And the schools are not as good.

Not helpful.

Anonymous wrote:I agree with a lot of your points OP! We have horrific roads here, car tax is outrageous, I too hate the windshield sticker and I pay way too much in taxes. I'm pissed off about my 1/2 day Kindergarten too. I'm hoping by the time my infant gets there, it will be full day.

But I think N. VA is a pretty area. I have pleasant neighbors, love my HOA, love our jobs, love going into DC on the weekends (we both used to work/live there, but our jobs moved out to Loudoun).

Glad you like it. My neighbors are good, some not, but majority are. Don't care about DC, been there a few times, saw sights and that was it. Like when I lived in NYC, I didn't got to the Empire State Bldg or take the ferry to Statue of Liberty every weekend. I think I went to both maybe twice in all the years I lived there.

As for VA vs Tahoe, to me, not even close. Crystal clear lake for summer fun, mountains for fresh air and hiking and biking and rafting, and tons of winter activities, plus an actual snow removal/plowing system in place!!

HOA here in Bram sucks worse than any other HOAs I have dealt with.

The Watch Dog program at schools is free and volunteer-oriented...I'm sure the PTA paid for food/drinks for the meeting.

Let me guess...you're new place is going to be much deeper into Reno than towards Tahoe.

No one turned me in, but I admit, I waited a good year and change to change lic plates on my cars.

two places I am looking at, one is at the base of Mt. Rose in Galena park and the other is in Incline Village. Galena park is a new build and IV is about 10 years old, with a remodel in the last 2 years, top to bottom.

We don't have the same experience at all in Fairfax, Va.

I think you just picked a crappy place to live.

I've lived in upper NW DC for 3 years (moved from CA) and I don't think I've even seen a planned community here yet.

OP didn't generalize and isn't talking about the DC area at all. She lives an hour drive (on a good day) from upper NW DC. She is talking about Virginia and comparing it to Texas. Not of general interest to folks in the District.

If OP is a she, she sure comes across like a bro.

But again, perhaps that's generally true for women who live in upper NW DC.

OP, if I lived in Brambleton (not quite sure where that is) and never came into DC, I'd don't think I'd leave this area with an overall high impression. So...you might be justified in that.

We live in Arlington, work in DC, and poke around museums, go to shows, and try new restaurants on the weekends. We love living in NOVA.

Hate to tell you, but OP hasn't said anything, in his dismissal of Brambleton, to suggest he'd be happy if only he were living in Arlington. He probably wants a lake, a good place to go tubing, a yard big enough to park two trucks, low taxes, and neighbors who think Hillary Clinton belongs in jail. None of which you'll find in Arlington.

But nice try to treat his posts as an excuse to talk about Arlington.

Weird response. My only point was that at least Arlington is proximal to something. Not out west with the tumbleweed.

What the hell is a Brambleton??

This is life in Brambleton/Ashburn, boring. It's because of all the stuffy suits with top-secret clearances around here. Everyone is scared to drink a few beers to loosen up or go out for some harmless debauchery (like skinnydipping, urban exploring, and such, you know you did it back in the day as a teen!) or else risk their clearance/job. So everyone around here is scared to do anything to seem "different" or "not normal" and that creates the cookie-cutter boring stuffy people you see around you. No one wants to break out and be unique- and if you do try it around this area, people will shun you quickly because they don't want to (or have the balls to) associate with anyone even slighty different from them and their office job, minivan, 2.5 kids, and townhouse in the suburbs.

Watching paint dry is a notch up for that area. Northern Va is turning into the worst place to live. No fun, too much rich people, no reality, its a sick one dimensional world of sadness.

If you think NOVA is bad, you wouldn't believe the nanny state hellhole Maryland has become. The state doesn't even resemble what it was 10 years ago, and not in a good way.

No tubing for me, prefer relaxing on a CLEAN lake and beach and swiming, kaying, jet skiis in the summer! And in the winter skiing, snowmobiling and sledding and they actual know how to clear the roads and don't cancel school at the signt of an ice cube in the road.

No trucks for me, have a jeep and a subaru, but only due to the stupid taxes I traded in my benz and lexus, will replace when I get out of here.

Don't care about Hilary, and couldn't care less whether she is in jail or not, glad she is not president though, she was was the worst of the two evils who ran.

I'm sorry, dear child. If you want to separate yourself from the bridge and tunnel crowd, and you so clearly do, you don't live in VA.
