Leaving Brambleton and NoVa behind

Think of Fairlington Village, but with (1) new single-family homes on small lots and townhouses near a retail center and (2) decent public schools.

If I get west of Falls Church, I get hives.

Spent last month in Texas and Reno-Tahoe area looking at new builds and looking into HOAs deeply as able to. Talking to residents and doing internet searches and legal searches for lawsuits, complaints, etc (local, state and regulatory agencies).

Can get a similiar sized place, no basement but size made up for on first two floors, with a lot more add ons and such for about 2/3rds what I paid Brambleton. The move alone with save us $20K+ in taxes, so a no-brainer. Builder is more flexible as well with changes to outside and inside. 7 months to build out.

You understand the tax structure in CA - right?

I agree with a lot of your points OP! We have horrific roads here, car tax is outrageous, I too hate the windshield sticker and I pay way too much in taxes. I'm pissed off about my 1/2 day Kindergarten too. I'm hoping by the time my infant gets there, it will be full day.

But I think N. VA is a pretty area. I have pleasant neighbors, love my HOA, love our jobs, love going into DC on the weekends (we both used to work/live there, but our jobs moved out to Loudoun).

There are some hot divorced MILFs in Ashburn, yet the distance is an issue for me in NW. Thank God they want to come into the city all the time to get away from their "Mc" lifestyle.

I've lived in upper NW DC for 3 years (moved from CA) and I don't think I've even seen a planned community here yet.

OP didn't generalize and isn't talking about the DC area at all. She lives an hour drive (on a good day) from upper NW DC. She is talking about Virginia and comparing it to Texas. Not of general interest to folks in the District.

Did someone turn you in for having out of state plates, OP? You sound particularly crazy about that.

The Watch Dog program at schools is free and volunteer-oriented...I'm sure the PTA paid for food/drinks for the meeting.

Let me guess...you're new place is going to be much deeper into Reno than towards Tahoe.

You may want to get that checked out.

Seriously, OP, you moved to Loudoun County! Ashburn is the land of the HOA. What did you expect??!! Much of your experience is not typical for NoVa. And Fairfax County did not pass the meal tax. Other school systems have full day kindergarten. You clearly didn't do much research before moving to the middle of nowhere.

buh-bye

I live in Alexandria, which is in Va, and is pretty different - not many HOA's.

We do all pay state income tax and car tax. Not sure how Texas is financed, but my sense is we get value for the money. And Va is generally low in taxes compared to more northerly states. If OP really had ideas on making state and local govt more efficient, she could have gotten involved in state and local politics. Doesn't sound like she did though.

Oh, and calling people in who are cheating on the car tax by not registering their cars in Va sounds logical to me. Otherwise the cost falls on the rest of us. Sounds like OP preferred that. OP does not sound terribly community minded or socially conscious?

It is much like Fairlington Village, but without the 't'. And the schools are not as good.

Yes and not relevant, as I said Tx and NV, Tahoe is in Nevada, part of it, so is Reno. Nothing could make me move to CA with their lousy taxes
