Is it rude to ask if friend plans to have kids?

I already know or knew this about my really good friends without ever having to ask. If you have to ask, then you shouldn't be asking because you aren't good friends.

And plus 1 to the poster who wrote about having a miscarriage and being asked this by an acquaintance. I had a miscarriage about a week and a half before my high school reunion and after a couple drinks someone asked me this and I did burst into tears. Awesome moment for me. /s

Don't ask. I've only made that mistake once...as an old friend was about to break news of her husband's alcoholism and rampant affairs, as well as their newly established separation.

Anyway. As someone who's struggled with fertility and now second infertility and IVF, I dread the questions about "adding" to our family.
