Any funky little neighborhoods in DC area? With Northern California-type vibe?

Daly City/ south SF hometown here. Silver Spring reminds me of San Mateo, a bit. And some neighborhoods in Baltimore remind me of the tenderloin/mission, a bit. But it sounds like you are looking for something more antiseptic.

Takoma Park is as close as you are going to get. I'm from the PNW and know what you are looking for, and you just can't find it here. But Takoma Park has a lot to offer, including a small and charming downtown with strict zoning laws, and nice housing stock.

Yes but there is nothing woodsy about downtown Frederick. Frederick reminds me more of downtown Portland, ME ( without the water of course) than Portland OR. And it's nothing like the Bay Area- at all. But it is a little funky with plenty of shops and restaurants

Lived in SF a good number of years. Indie businesses, food coop on Buckeystown Pike, lots of farmers markets because there are a lot of farms nearby. Civil War era architecture and people-wise, if you stay in the downtown area, liberal amd diverse.

She asked for Northern California, not Portland, OR. And there are plenty of woods in all the state parks nearby. Hello, Appalachia!

It seems like you're looking for money, bohemian vibe, and redwood trees. No, does not exist here.

Not downtown. Head out into the country, yeah, you'll find Trumpites, but not downtown.

Would Middleburg VA check off some of OP's boxes? It's closer to woods than anything in downtown Frederick.

Downtown Frederick:
Precinct 002-001 (Lincoln ES, south side of downtown): Clinton 952, Trump 404
Precinct 002-002 (Lincoln ES): Clinton 302, Trump 176
Precinct 002-003 (Lutheran Church, home of two of Frederick's clustered spires): Clinton 837, Trump 432
Precinct 002-005 (Talley Rec Center, includes the Baker Park area I'd be sure): Clinton 1051, Trump 578
Precinct 002-011 (North Frederick ES): Clinton 609, Trump 306

Let's pick out some other areas of FredCo (at random):
001-002 (Tuscarora HS, just to the south of I-70): Clinton 953, Trump 695
003-003 (Middletown Primary): Trump 609, Clinton 417
005-001 (Emittsburg ES): Trump 1334, Clinton 422
006-001 (Wolfsville ES): Trump 757, Clinton 193
007-004 (Urbana Library): Clinton 443, Trump 386
008-001 (Libertytown): Trump 834, Clinton 252
015-002 (Thurmont ES): Trump 1143, Clinton 322
016-001 (Myersville ES): Trump 1184, Clinton 571
018-001 (Twin Ridge ES, Mt. Airy): Trump 1276, Clinton 710
021-002 (Whitter ES): Clinton 520, Trump 419
025-001 (Brunswick MS): Trump 963, Clinton 703

Early voting
@ Frederick Senior Center; Clinton 10,066, Trump 4,803
@ Thurmont Library: Trump 1,680; Clinton 1,083
@ Urbana Library: Clinton 4,674; Clinton 3,068

Palisades DC. Great stores - food, wine, pet food, dry cleaners - great restaurants, from ethnic to American, high end to laid back, excellent farmers market, yoga studios, tons of parks, including both neighborhood parks and Battery Kemble park (woods/stream), diverse housing options plus diverse residents, and great neighborhood elementary school, easy access to bike trails and the Potomac River. And mostly democrat-leaning, like most of DC.
