UVA vs Cornell, Georgetown, etc. for in-state

Not sure why you are worrying about a purely theoretical problem. But here's the answer: yes, HYP, Cornell, and Penn (but only Wharton undergrad) over UVA. Duke? Maybe. That's about it.

It seems like it boils down to if you get Harvard, Yale, or Princeton, you go there over UVA. If you get lower tier ivies such as Penn, Cornell, you go to UVA because of cost difference.

The only people who talk like this are UVA parents. Nobody with a brain turns down Northwestern, Penn or Cornell for UVA.

I've met two UVA grads who were accepted at Ivy League schools, but their parents (who presumably could have afforded it based on other factors) forced them to go to UVA for the lower tuition. They are still very bitter about it decades later.

There are some parents who look at the price tag, think that translates into UVA being A-mazing, and won't consider other options. It's like a cult. There are at least a few posters on DCUM who think this way.

I'm guessing that well over 50 percent of the posters here went to UVA. Don't generalize.

Says the person who didn't get in. Sure, it's comparable to Berkeley and UCLA and U Mich, but no, it's not the same as all states' flagship campuses.

No, I didn't get in because I didn't apply. When I was applying a few friends of mine did apply and a few went. FYI, I was the better student. Went Ivy. When you assume...

Wow - really?!

And I said "some" parents force their kids and "at least a few posters on DCUM" would too. Do you disagree?

Thanks what about Georgetown? Why Duke maybe? Superior Basketball and higher US News Rank.

Such a silly question. Sounds like you think the only point of college is to end up with a name in a line on your résumé. I always thought the point of college was to study and learn and grow. There's no "right" or "best" when it comes to college -- only what is a good fit for your child and your family.

HYP/Stanford/Duke are schools to take over U.Va. undergrad for a Virginia resident.

But a school like Cornell or Georgetown? I don't know....I'd advise you to do some deep research into grad school admissions. I can only speak to Penn, where I went to law school, but there were several U.Va. and William & Mary undergrads in my law school class.

I know that the site Poets & Quants periodically will list feeder schools for top MBA programs (Harvard, Stanford, etc.) U.Va. usually places well in those articles.

And it also depends on the undergrad major. I could see Cornell/Georgetown maybe winning out over U.Va. for Arts & Sciences if the students wants to get a Ph.D., but there's not a rational person who would take either school over U.Va. if the student plans to major in business. McIntire really doesn't take a back seat to any other undergrad business school in terms of placement and reputation.

Georgetown has the benefit of being in a big city, which means internship possibilities. With the job market as it is, students who have actual experience working in firms/offices before they graduate can have a leg up over those who don’t.

That's so sad that they felt that way. It's the kids' personalities and drive that are the main factors in their sucess...blaming their parents who foot the tuition for them at a state school is beyond pathetic.

UVA is so far back you can't even find it.
