| We never heard back from OP. I'm guessing her check was found and delivered yesterday. Hopefully, she didn't light up her attorney. |
| I really want the story on the rental property. My money is on a rental home in Bay Area rented as a group home to a bunch of programmers who's startup just went belly up? |
I mean $6k monthly rent but having trouble making the bills... weird weird. |
|
We receive a lot of cashiers checks in my business. Enough that I can tell you for a fact that you just need to go to the bank that issued it and they can reissue. They will probably make you sign an indemnification and pay a fee, but it is a check like any other. It should be reissuable with 1 day.
Btw, $19K by mail is in my opinion reasonable. FedEx could have lost it just as easily as usps and you'd be in the same position. |
Utterly impossible to do beyobd putting a trace on it. What attorney sends a check this way???? |
| I hate certified mail. My parents once sent an important time sensitive document via certified mail. They should have just sent it normal. I literally waited for this letter daily. It eventually got returned to my parents' house. I went to the post office but they couldn't instantly figure out where it was. The mailman seemed to come to my house the only 5 minutes I was either taking a shower or had gone to the grocery store. I was very annoyed. |
The amazing thing is she was on here complaining before the daily mail route had even begun. I've sent a few things by USPS certified mail including signed papers for a legal settlement and never had an issue. |
You knew you had a certified letter coming that could only be delivered if a person was present to sign for it and you left to go grocery shopping? Why is this USPS's fault again? |
| I had a cashier's check mailed from DC to MD a few years back certified mail with Delivery Confirmation with USPS. It took THREE WEEKS to arrive. I had to cancel the check, have it reissued, and mailed again and used FedEx. USPS is the worst. |
OP here. Not surprised how off the rails my post went. Still not word on where the check is. spent close to an hour on hold with the post office yesterday. gave up because I was at work and couldn't hold any longer. some answers to some of the snarky comments: 1) have I ripped into our attorney? not yet. But I will, and rightfully so. 2) to the person who commented that maybe we shouldn't be landlords if we can't afford to be without the $18K. Where'd you pull that one from? That was a stretch obviously made to incite. I never said we couldn't afford to be without the payment. And if this is how YOU think about YOUR finances, then you're not very financially savvy. If you had $18K floating around the US somewhere, you'd be just as upset. I dare any of you not to be. I am more calm today than I was a few days ago because some of you actually posted some good suggestions which made me feel better that all is not lost the check is not located. 3) Nope, the tenants are not some computer geeks out in SV. Its in the West but not California. Step away from the type writer Sherlock. It used to be our main home, then we moved. so its not a shit shack, hence the $5K rent. The tenants are a husband and wife, in their late 50's. And to think that I came here to ask a question about a serious matter that I really needed guidance on because I know there are a lot of really smart people on DCUM who could probably give me some sound advice. Thank you to those who made non-snarky suggestions on how to solve my issue. To the snarks, I understand how my post maybe would have made you question my situation or make rude comments about it. Its okay, I'm an adult and can take it. Now, off to call the post office again. Wish me luck! or not.... |
| Other than California, what states have a 5K a month mortgage? But the OP is modifying things because 18K divided by 3 (months) is 6K. |
you didn't read my other posts. PLUS LATE FEES PLUS ATTORNEY'S FEES man you guys are bored. |
PS - I never said our mortgage was $5K! reaching again. Actually our mortgage on that house is $3100. But the rental market is strong,so I am charging the going rate - FOR THAT AREA. And there are a lot of places in this country where a $5K mortgage would not be at all a reach. You happen to be living in one of those areas. you're not very smart. |

Wow. Ok, OP, I'm really sorry the check seems to be lost or in limbo. But the intensity with which you are approaching it just seems......off scale.
I get DCUM is place to vent, and that there is a long history with the renters. All signs point to easy ways to become frustrated. I also get that some PPs are sort of annoying (and some might be intentionally taunting you). But really. Breathe. Call your attorney. Don't light into him. Explain the problem and ask what attorney suggests. Approach this as a problem that needs to be solved. If you approach everything in life in an adversarial manner, life is a LOT harder. Yes, this situation sucks. But I'd suggest taking a step back and thinking of how to lessen the anger and hostility. This is just another problem to solve. |
