As much as I hate the word shrill, I have to say that guy was an extremely painful version of it. I want that six minutes back. He's full of himself about that dialogue business. One thing this election made clear is that a large swath of the country is not interested in dialogue. They wanted change, plain and simple, and they're happy the dialogue guy is on his way out of the White House. Trump did what every other president did before him. He won a popularity contest by being himself. The pendulum was already swinging against Clinton and the herself that she is wasn't popular enough. It's disheartening to believe someone so explicitly racist, sexist and xenophobic is now the American standard bearer, but national elections after a popular two-term president are always about following a movement to change the status quo. Pantsuit Nation as a movement fell short in the same way that Hockey Moms did. It's not appealing to a broad enough segment and the built-in exclusivity is rankly offensive. The DNC needs a rural strategy. For some reason, though, they think that means they have to ignore metropolitan areas. It's just not true, and once they realize it they'll start winning again. |
