Is Georgetown worth it over in-state UVA?

LOL. Does your daughter go to Jefferson? Because Jefferson is not exactly the "average" high school, and I speak as a Jefferson grad who went to UVA along with about 110 of my fellow classmates.

There are about 2,500 Virginia high school students in the freshman class at UVA. There probably aren't more than 10-20 that go even from the best high schools (besides Jefferson). it's hardly "high school 2.0".

I'm from NYC. Never heard of UVA. Did not know the difference between Ohio State and UVA. I know people in VA think UVA is amazing but it just isn't as well known elsewhere.

I grew up in Boston and would have found it astonishing even at age 18 that someone had "never heard" of UVA. I have lived in Pittsburgh and St. Louis (as well as DC) and have family in southern California. UVA is well-known everywhere, among people who know anything about universities.

+1 Grew up in New Jersey. When I was in high school, UVA was considered a great school.

It feels strange that anyone who has done a serious college search over the past 30 years or so wouldn't at least know that UVA is a pretty decent school. UVA averaged 21st or 22nd on the USNWR rankings from 1990-current.

I'm not saying those rankings are really worthwhile or anything, but give me a break. Everyone looking at top 25 caliber schools knows the difference between UVA/Berkeley/Michigan and run of the mill public universities because those schools are generally on those lists (or were, historically, before recent gutting by state legislatures).

I grew up near Philadelphia to Ivy league educated parents and I had no idea that UVA was a good school. Every smart kid I knew went to Penn or Princeton. UVA was not on my radar at all. No one I knew (from my private school) went there or even considered it.
Then I went to college in Chicago and medical school in Baltimore and learned that UVA was one of the strongest state schools. But it wasn't until I moved to DC that I met UVA grads and got inundated with UVA hype.

That said I'd definitely send my kid there over Georgetown based on cost savings alone. It's a great school. No need to spend more.

OMG OMG OMG don't leave us hanging. Pray tell, what schools did you go to in those cities? DON'T MAKE US WONDER ONE SECOND LONGER!

Huh?
Actually not the schools you might think at all.

Or anything about one of the men who founded this country.

I have 2 degrees from UVA and no degrees from Georgetown. I have been very impressed with both the UVA and Georgetown graduates that I have met. I think that any differences in reputation are barely discernable, and both schools are highly regarded and well recognized (although IMO the Georgetown campus is much nicer).

If one of our children wants/ed to go to Georgetown over UVA then that would be fine with us and we still would pay for it all. For us it comes down to our child's determination of where will s/he will be the happiest.

No way would it be worth it. UVA is highly regarded; at least on peer with Georgetown. It's not really a discussion if money is the decider.

This!

Maybe not quite 100, but say 75-80 x4 = 300 at UVA from just one high school. Most kids know students from 3-5 local high schools, so you get there and you pseudo know 1000 kids. How can you possibly reinvent yourself and really grow when you're surrounded by everyone from where you grew up? Further 65% of UVA is common wealth. Why would you want such an insular experience?

You're right. No diversity in this state. Terrible place.

Seriously, if grad school is on the horizon, I would go for the more affordable option.

So odd that NJ doesn't have a good flagship public college.

Why would someone turn down UVa instate, which is one of the most amazing college deals in the country?
