Good game but Landon on the short end -- St. Albans won 2-0.

Landon may have had fewer points on the scoreboard, but that game was a win for everyone. The programs, which are often overshadowed by the lacrosse and other teams, the students and extended school communities, high school soccer writ large, the cheering squads (referred to in the WaPo article), did I leave anyone out?

I know that the soccer success for schools like St Albans, Landon and Dematha certainly do much for school/community spirit, good press, etc.

But I know of no other school in the area where the soccer team is so intertwined with the soul of the school as that for WIS!

Yes, WIS seems like it has a great soccer atmosphere. Very skilled boys' team and amazing support from the rest of the school.

Although maybe they can get too intense? When I stayed to watch the first half of boys' DCSAA championship last year after watching the girls championship at Georgetown, I had to move my seat away from some shrieking WIS parents who seemed unhinged even for a sporting event. They were freaking out about imaginary fouls, arguing sideline calls (!), and it wasn't a particularly good look coming from adults (also I feared eardrum rupture).

I guess the moral of the story is that even sophisticated European/American cosmopolitans can act like boors when it comes to sports.

Girls soccer update:

--Paul VI pulls off the (minor) upset against a very good St. John's team to win the WCAC title. Intense, hard-fought 1-0 game between the #4 Post team (St. John's) and the #6 ranked team (Paul VI). Won't see a better battle than that one -- congrats to Paul VI.

--National Cathedral (seeded 4th in ISL tournament) knocks off the #1 and #2 seeds to win the ISL tournament and thus share the ISL league title with regular season winner Bullis. NCS beat Potomac 3-1. Seemed like they peaked at the right time -- no superstar but excellent team depth and team play.

NCS was beaten soundly this season by both Bullis and Potomac. To come back in a few weeks and handle both isn't luck it's excellent coaching. NCS Coach Danielle Malagari is a rock star and will probably be heading to the college or pro coaching ranks sooner rather than later.

She's terrific -- was a great player and is a great coach (was going to write "great young coach" but no modifier needed).

NCS lost in the semi-finals of the City championship to St. John's in OT today. St. John's will play Wilson in the girls' final.

On the boys' side, WIS defeated St. Albans in penalty kicks (5-4). WIS will play Bell in the DCSAA finals.

I agree that Malagari is a great coach. NCS soccer has had a long winning tradition, but it has stepped up a notch since she arrived five years ago.

WIS did win the DCSAA finals 1-0 over Bell on a penalty kick by Nico Ubide in overtime.

However, the St. John's girls dominated Wilson on their way to a 6-0 victory.

I think the WIS students and parents are out of control soccer "fans" and anyone who claims the lacrosse parents in the DC metro area are the worst should attend a WIS soccer game against a strong opposing team. WIS behavior, verbal taunts and "cheering" is ugly, vitirolic, and displays the worst type of sports "fan" behavior. Local lacrosse and football (and frankly all other sports) "fan" behavior truly pales in comparison.
