I will add that the area around DCI and Bridges has become a nightmare. There are no less than 6 crossing guards and it is a zoo. I imagine the drop off alone would take 15-20 minutes for someone driving.

It's so bad that it is fucking up the commutes trying to get to the other side of the Green Line (both heading east and heading west) from the other access points as well. I'm hoping that things settle down as people figure out their routines and shortcuts.

I honesty can't imagine a worse intersection in the entire city. It's messing up North Capitol, South Dakota, Riggs, Missouri, Kennedy. It was even bad when I went through it at 9:30am.

At 9:30, the problem wouldn't have been either school -- DCB starts its day at 8, and Bridges opens its doors to kids at 8:20. By 9:30, anyone still arriving for either school would be very late. I think it's just a bad intersection, regardless of the schools being there.

+1 That intersection is just bad with or without the schools. We applied to DCB just because, but don't think we would have accepted based on the traffic jams around that immediate area.

Taking the bus or biking to these schools is quite easy if you're coming from Petworth, FWIW. No traffic to worry about that way.

Well, kind of, except that I am a cyclist that lives in the neighborhood and was almost hit by a car on Fort Totten Drive this morning on my way into work after dropping my kid at school. I've also been honked at and had many close calls with impatient and aggressive drivers since the beginning of the school year (really people, don't pass a cyclist unless you can give them AT LEAST 3 feet of clearance). Not sure if the jerk drivers are school parents or not, but have definitely noticed that the traffic and accompanying aggression has increased DRAMATICALLY since school has started. Something really needs to be done about this area... but i'm not sure I know of anything would help at this point. Hopefully DDOT is more creative than i am!

Only if you value football over academics!!!

You shouldn't choose DCI or Macfarland if you value academics.

No, DCI looks like a good bet for academics. Macfarland looks like a good bet for... feeding Roosevelt?

I have no faith whatsoever in DCPS delivering a quality MS. If they were good at it, then BM wouldn't still be twisting in the wind.

That said, I think DCI would be stronger if they hadn't been forced to include DC Bi. The good feeders were always going to be YY, LAMB, and MV. Probably Stokes too, eventually. Still, the opportunity to get an IB Diploma is something that DCPS cannot and will not ever take on in a serious fashion.

What do you mean by "forced to include DCB"? How were they forced in your view?

+1. Shouldn't it be forced to accept MV, Stokes and DCI since there is no discernible difference?

Because DCB has poors. Is that what you are trying to say PP? You should be embarrassed.

I live in the area, close to the intersection in question in front of DC Bilingual, on Riggs Rd NE and Blair Rd Ne. The intersection is a severe public safety concern, especially now that there are two charter schools and health clinic nearby, in addition to all the pedestrian traffic that uses the nearby public transit. I, personally, have had several near misses with cars. The crossing guard at the intersection this morning told me that a coworker of his at the intersection the previous day had their foot run over. There are some relatively easy fixes that could easy the issues, but it takes a lot of momentum and pressure to have the city even evaluate an issue like this. Unfortunately, traffic is a dull topic, and it takes a scary tragedy, like a car hitting a child on the 500 block block of Riggs Rd. NE, for anyone to pay any attention (and then, only briefly).

I am working on drawing the city's attention to the intersection. If you would like to be included on a letter to the city to draw attention to the problem and request a study and improvements to the intersection, please send an email to me at [alexhadden at hotmail dot com]. In addition to the 311 traffic calming request process, I think it will be more effective to have a letter go directly to the DC Council Member, Mayor, DDOT, etc. Cheers, Alex

DC Bi is the weakest feeder to DCI, but it still gets you into DCI. Inspired Teacheing is a bit of dead end at the higher grades.

Why? Do you think private school parents are embarrassed? Do you think WOTP parents who buy those ugly little post-WWII houses are embarrassed? Everybody wants to avoid exposing their precious children to undesirable influences. What hurdle of hypocrisy do you have to overcome to be okay with paying for the wealthy (such as our current President) to avoid exposing his children to public schools, and then resenting your fellow citizens for wanting to do the same?

Nobody wants to be around criminals and idiots. Not being born wealthy, most people will try to avoid allowing their children to be exposed to elements of criminality.

That doesn't make anyone racist, prejudiced, or mean, or cruel. IT MAKES THEM GOOD PARENTS.

You're actually saying that kids at and from DC Bilingual are criminals? Or idiots?

I'm saying parents can't be blamed for preferring a more exclusive environment when possible. Ask the President.
