Do I really need a doctors note?

Manager here, and I agree with all PPs who've said how crazy this is. But if he wants a note, get a note. Then the water is a medical accommodation, which makes it incredibly difficult to refuse.

Have you been reprimanded for not paying attention during meetings?

Were you tasked with note taking, dazed off, and provided crummy notes?

If so, this rule was created to keep you on task (and sadly, everyone else has to suffer the consequences).

The problems you describe are unlikely related to water bottles. The punishment does not fit the crime. It might even be counterproductive.

But even if the OP had these issues, prohibiting water bottles during meetings doesn't mean these issues would be solved. If a manager implemented this new rule thinking it would motivate an attendee to take better notes, but doesn't discuss the issue with the crummy note-taker, then that manager really sucks and needs to go back to manager school. A good manager would address the issue by taking the note-taker aside and saying, "I've noticed you get distracted during meetings and the notes are suffering. What's going on?" And then going forward from there.

Yes, this all day, I feel like I am about to flip a table when a meeting crosses over the 2 hour mark.
