Dog park bites

For those that were helpful we are going to take her in for more training and use a soft muzzle around other dogs for a while. No dog parks.

She was specially selected for the hospital program. I didn't sign her up. She went through tests and trainings and they asked for her. So go take your precious snowflake dog out for a walk and leave mine alone.

And BTW go look up attack and bite stats for tour Golden's, labs, and chows.

Go look at the stats for pit, pit mixes and rott deaths by mauling, maiming and bites.

Go.look at those stats as a percentage of their population.

Look at the damage inflicted by their bites vs other dogs.

Pits and pit mixes are a manance to dogs and people alike.

Menance not manance.

ugh. It's the people who keep breeding these dogs that are the issue. They're not breeding for friendliness and demeanor like normal breeders select for. BAD breeding.

For you to assume so based on her breed is ignorant. Its also the second time she bit another dog in 2 .5 years. Not a terrible track record. But I do want it to never happen again. Our vet said the fact that she nipped the skin both times without drawing blood is a good sign. That's her warning. That if she wanted to kill she had the means to but she doesn't. The both of us were attacked by a dog 3x her size and she didn't attack until the dog jumped on me and even then she got the dog off of me and laid over me.

I say all this because yes I get its a problem and I don't know if I could pull her off if something worse ever happened by myself.

Thanks for the helpful advice. We don't usually go to the dog park unless its empty and we had her do some pack walks that she did great on. We Also take her off leash late at night and she just runs circles.

Please don't make this a Pitt issue. I only mentioned so you know what size she is.

Like the others said - some dogs aren't good in dog parks. Sounds like yours is one of those.

I am a huge pit bull person - I love them; love underdogs - but it also helps feed stereotypes if a pit does badly in a dog park. So for the sake of all the other pit bulls, find other ways to keep your dog occupied, please!

And I'm pretty sure op said she/he doesn't take their dog to the dog park regularly. Trying something does not make someone a bad fog owner. I don't agree with off leash walks but other than that nothing the op said is criminal. And you are all prosecuting.

You don't have to train them to do what they are bred to do...herding breeds. Retrievers. Yes they need training on honing their instincts. OP posted about the pit and the jack russell. OMG. GSD and malinois etc might be trained for police and military work but labs are trained for different police and military work. It would be far less expensive to just get some rescue pits than have breeding programs for police/military/guide dogs/disabled vets.

Guess what all you pit fans? I might become a puppy raiser for a service dog organization. Based on it's [and similar organizations'] experience I would not qualify if I owned certain breeds. One of which is a pit. So people that train dogs to the ultimate level know less than the pittie people?

What dog was 3x the size of a pit? A mastiff?

And examine what some call a Lab. This looks like a lab https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/34716486
This says Labrador retriever and Black Lab mix which means 2 Labrador retriever parents [3 possible SOLID colors are black, yellow, choc brown-not silver]. https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/34673428

Not a Lab. Due to broad faces in English labs and stocky bodies they try to pass them off as Labs.

HA, that black & white dog is DEFINITELY not a lab, perhaps they made a typo!!
Labs are bred to be very sweet dogs, but, an awful/abusive owner can change the destiny of any animal.

I hope you also keep your dog leashed, OP, especially while muzzled since she won't be able to defend herself when a dog attacks her.

My dad has rescued Pitts over the years and they have been incredibly sweet and gentle. Which makes me wonder if it's more about how they're raised.

Yes and PLEASE remove this dog from tue childrens' hospital program. Wtf is wrong with you?

This is really uninformed. First, dog aggressive dogs are rarely people aggressive dogs. Secondly, the dog park is bad environment for many dogs because you have untrained owners and any assholes dog can be there My dog has been attacked or in a fight a few times at the dog park before we finally stopped going. But he does great at Doggie Daycare and is well loved it there and a huge friend of neighborhood dog and kids. And yep, he's a pit mix.

But why are all these pits "rescues"?? Why can't we just stop the breeding of them? Enforce spay/neuter laws. Dogs are amazing, as is rescuing dogs, but we need to start looking at the root problem.

Agree.

If they were such wonderful breeds there would not be so many pitt rescue organizations.
