It's aligned with Emancipation Day. The theory is that it will be the same week every year rather than aligned with Easter.

I happen to like it, but a lot of people don't. Which will soon be evident in the comments that follow.

Emancipation Day is a waste, just a political sop to an underwhelming DC government workforce. We already have MLK day.

Yeah, MLK is basically the same thing as emancipation...

Why do we celebrate memorial day and veterans day. Same thing also! Plus 4th of July!!? It's all the same!

/sarcasm

Yeah and Christmas AND Easter?!

Why can't DCPS plan forward two years -- issue a two-year calendar -- the way a lot of other public schools do?

All of these staff days and half days are a wasteful sop to the WTU. WTF?

Why don't you move to another district that doesn't have staff development days and half days? Oh, that's right every district has staff development days and half days. Your verbiage leads me to conclude that you're also the anonymous poster that equates Emancipation Day with MLK day. Is it because Emancipation Day celebrates African-American freedom from forced servitude at the hands of American white men, and MLK day honors an African-American man who gave his life for justice and equal opportunity?
