Extended school year starts 8/8 and ends 7/13.

Start after Labor Day campaign needed!

Even Virginia is considering moving toward an August start. I think the Labor Day ship has sailed except for privates.

Your campaign can move ahead - do you really think with the move to extended school year this will get a serious consideration?

Boo! I love starting before Labor Day--more instructional time.

Don't worry--the ship has sailed. DC has started in August for many years. No turning back now.

What adjustments if any does the Union need to make for the extended school year schools?

I really hate this calendar because I lose out on the weekend plus the 3 school days = 5 fewer vacation days for my children and me.

What do you think the attendance rate will be during the 3 days before the break?

I will not vote for a mayor who endorses people who propose such inconsiderate schedules.

But you get the weekend of New Year's Day and the following Monday.

It is because of the inauguration. Also matches MCPS, fwiw

It's aligned with Emancipation Day. The theory is that it will be the same week every year rather than aligned with Easter.

I happen to like it, but a lot of people don't. Which will soon be evident in the comments that follow.

Emancipation Day is a waste, just a political sop to an underwhelming DC government workforce. We already have MLK day.

Two points:

Why can't DCPS plan forward two years -- issue a two-year calendar -- the way a lot of other public schools do?

All of these staff days and half days are a wasteful sop to the WTU. WTF?

As a parent who works FT - having a short winter break is more aligned with our needs. We do not need to enroll the children in winter break camp!

And the later Spring break makes it a lot less expensive for a family vacation.

Thank you DC!

I work FT and I think the new schedule sucks big time.

Yeah, MLK is basically the same thing as emancipation...

Why do we celebrate memorial day and veterans day. Same thing also! Plus 4th of July!!? It's all the same!
