I'm with you 17:36. I skipped the Intown application all together, and applied only to Blue Igloo and Little Graces. I loved Little Graces! Blue Igloo was full of warm parents and nannies, though a bit crowded. I'd be happy to have my child attend either.

Isn't Blue Igloo is 100 percent nannies? That's what I've always been told.

I saw a lot more nannies at the Blue Igloo OH than at the others--

Doesn't matter to me whether they are nannies or parents, as long as they're good people with friendly kids.

That's ridiculous. If you plan on attending yourself, you'll want some peer there too. Play groups are for the moms too, not just the kids.

Your comment suggests that the nannies have nothing to offer, and aren't worth acknowledgement/conversation. What an elitist comment. You should definitely feel welcome at Intown. And FWIW, whoever is taking care of the child day in and day out IS a peer.

a woman at intown asked me all of the "status" questions ie: what does your husband do? do you have help? where do you summer? all which if answered "properly" can show you are in a certain income and social bracket. she also asked me who i knew in intown. unbelievable. i couldn't believe it.

I'm not sure who you spoke with at the Intown OH but we did not have that experience at all, and we spoke to at least 3 moms. It also sounds a little unbelievable that someone would be that transparent in their questioning, if that was their intention. What about the other moms you spoke to while you were there? Are you saying all of them were like that?

Anonymous wrote:From what I heard, there are two different "big threes". At middle / high school, the big three are Sidwell, NCS, St. Albans (and Sidwell in addition accepts at pre-k, the other two not until 4th grade).

The pre-K/K big three are: Sidwell, Beauvoir (feeds into NCS and St. Albans) and GDS.

So maybe poor GDS gets booted off the big three list once they hit fourth grade or something.

I disagree (as do the national ratings) that NCS is one of the Big Three. While it certainly is prestigous, and lots of politicians' children attend, the reality is that NCS consistently ranks below other schools (including both Holton and GDS) in the area.

Putting that aside, the bottom line is that it is completely ridiculous to put your child in a school with the goal of your child getting into a particular private school. Most of the high end private schools (GDS, Sidwell, Holton, Landon, NCS, STA) have similar academic programs, but each school is completely different in terms of the environment. I'd hate to put my son in a preschool that I thought was a feeder to Landon only to find out that he isn't the slightest bit athletic ... for example. Let our kids be kids. Sure, it may be easier to get into Beauvoir from NPS or NCRC, but there plenty of other preschools that feed into those schools as well as to Beauvoir or Sidwell. In fact, the admissions people at the "Big Three" as well as at Holton and Landon will tell you that they accept a considerable percentage of children from DC public schools.

As for now, my child is wait-listed at every single preschool to which he applied, and, you know what, I don't care. I'm not the slightest bit worried that he won't get into a great private school in third or fourth grade. What bothers me more is that some of these posts sound so elitist that I really am concerned that perhaps I should abandon our plan to send him to private school (whichever one ends up being best for him) and instead should move to the suburbs and send him to public school. I mean no offense, but if this area has come to us sending our kids to the right playgroup, then I simply give up. Makes me want to homeschool the kid.

I was just at Blue Igloo today and there were at least 12 moms...so not just a place for nannies. The moms are great. And, it is not a place from which to apply to the next step. It is a place to meet other people and enjoy a large, open play space with your child. It seems that is what friends get out of all three groups.

Did you have a St. Patrick's Day party there today? Is that why there were so many moms?
