| Haven't been to your other ideas but Ireland definitely has what you're looking for and is a pretty easy country to travel in (English speaking) |
Hello Harold& Kumar! BTW you can rent Italian castles: http://www.homeaway.com/search/refined/italy/region:39/Property+Type:castle |
| We saw a bunch in Brittany in France this summer - the kids loved them. |
| Great falls or potomac |
Technically, these are McMansions. Our tour of the Potomac with our little one to see where his ancestors lived, really made history come alive for him. The columns date all the way back to 1972.

| Hearst castle in ca. I know not exotic but sure makes an impact. I remember it from when I was a kid. Awesome. |
Hearst Castle is amazing! The interior of most of the rooms were brought over from real castles in Europe. And it was designed by a female architect. Very rare at the time it was built! |
Haha +1 |
Haha +2 And I'll show my kids the fields in which their ancestors toiled. |
| Germany and Austria! I went when I was ten or so - am now in my mid-30s and still remember and awe I felt at the grand ballrooms and stories told |
| Those of you who went to Wales or Scotland , did you do a tour? Which one? Or just plan yourself? Might want to do it with my 6year old |
great place! |
This - Nothing like seeing Sleeping Beauty's castle for reals. Then take them to South of France, and to Versailles (Palace, but it counts.) |

Another vote for Scotland. Plus, when in Edinburgh, you could visit Fettes College, a boarding school that is the inspiration for Hogwarts. The real "James Bond" attended as well. He was a colleague of Ian Fleming's and probably had no idea his name would become so famous.
