JKLMM Parents: Are You Planning to Send Your Kids To Wilson?

I really wanted to like Deal, and figured it must be something great now, since so many more of my affluent neighbors send their kids to DCPS than in the 70s-2005s. But alas, no.

Is Wilson supposed to be better than Deal?

I know, right? Your neighbors are such idiots. You should really just go tell them how wrong they got it.

I don't care what my neighbors do with their own children, so I wouldn't feel the need to engage them in discussion about their choices. This isn't about them.

Is Wilson supposed to be a better academic package than Deal, all things considered?

My kid is in K, so I have about 8 years to decide. Considering how much DC has changed in the last 8, I think I'll hold off on deciding.

If your kids go to private school and have never gone to public school, how do you know with such certainty that Deal isn't "something great now"? How old are your kids? Do they have friends at Deal? Do you work at Deal?

I've done an incredible amount of due diligence, including but not limited to, visits, interviews at school on off-season, looking at one neighbor's kid's "binder", curriculum comparison online with current school and conversation. I have one teacher friend at Deal (now in admin). Believe me, I too want to save money and build a family room/ master suite addition on our colonial.

What should I know about Wilson's curriculm and faculty ? How easy/ difficult is it for students to select their own teachers?

My children are still pretty young so I'm not making any decisions now. I'd like to send our kids to Deal and Wilson, and at least for now, that is the plan. But the most recent budget cuts at Wilson leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. Not sure what we'd do instead of Wilson, but doing something else is definitely now in the back of my mind.

What? Do any public high schools allow students to choose a teacher? You can guess about what teacher is teaching what higher level class and attempt to schedule accordingly--that's about it.

Stay where you are, you will not be happier elsewhere. Deal and Wilson will never satisfy you, no matter what.

I couldn't agree more.

And FYI that not all of us are sending our kids to public school to save money. Some of us believe in public school, that there are benefits that aren't available in private.

As someone who has done an incredible amount of due diligence at Deal, you know the only way to have your specific questions about Wilson answered is to do the same amount of due diligence at Wilson. Stop being a troll.

PP here; that's what I was getting at. But, in a school as big as Wilson, is could be the case that two different teachers teach the same exact class, right? Or in practice is, say, AP World History taught exclusively by Mr. John Doe, whereas "regular history" is always taught by Mrs. Susan Doe?

And to PP, it's not the case that I and others like me "wouldn't be satisfied" with "public." We may in fact move to MoCo in a couple of years to take advantage of one of a few high schools. I'd prefer not to move, because we love our house and location, so I want to explore the Wilson day-to-day experience some more. Not 'where do some Wilson grads get into college every year? Why, Yale!' That doesn't tell outsiders anything about their education. i.e., that Yale admit from 2014 could have an IQ of 140/get perfect SATs, and run a mile in 5 minutes, and be a double Yale legacy. Or not -- it could be that he's typical of NWDC and Wilson inputs were the factor that tipped the balance for him, due to amazing Wilson curriculum, instruction, and global experiences while there.

Can we have a discussion without lashing out at me for opting out of Deal?

Not a troll. Are you a parent? Sound like you might be. I don't understand the resistance of talking about the strengths of your teen's school on an anonymous forum.

Kids are still very young but I think no for my older child - I think she need a smaller more controlled environment. For younger child maybe but she is in Kindergarten so not something I will worry about at this stage.

OP, why aren't you concerned with other Wilson feeders. Curious why you don't ask Hearst, Oyster, Shepherd, Stoddert, Bancroft parents? Especially when some of these school do as well if not better than JKLM?
