I don't doubt some moron told DH to do those things.

Lawyers from small firms to BigLaw are all about appearance and letting the rest of us now how successful they are. Which amuses the hell out of us tech IPO guys who actually are successful.

DH is a surgeon and earns about $900k. His partners always comment on our modest lifestyle. It has become sort of a joke. Many of his colleagues are country club types who live in Mclean. We have a lovely home in a fine school district. We are happy where we are.

Throughout the years, we have met many different types of professionals with vastly different lifestyles. We have witnessed many entitled kids from wealthy households who did the best for everything - best private schools, best homes, best vacations, best cars, best boats, best country club. We do not want our kids to be that way.

Yes that all sounds just awful. Thank god you're keeping them away from the best schools and great vacations.

I do know what you mean, and I also know of successful people whose kids are so spoiled and entitled that it's likely that the generational wealth pretty much stops with them. I guess it depends on how you raise the kids. We live in McLean, best schools, best vacations, best cars, etc. However, my kids are taught that all of this did not come from being lazy and idle. It takes persistent hard work and discipline to make good life choices and earn success. We also teach them that success is sometimes fragile, and that at the end of the day, the only important thing that is everlasting is family and time together. I think it's a sign of weakness that the only way you and your kids avoid being corrupted by consumption is to avoid it.

Well, to be fair, they have to meet and impress people. You don't even have to put on pants to make money.

I'm a business man who does a little of both, some days I have to meet and impress people, some days I don't have to put on pants. I can appreciate both life styles. I wouldn't be so short sighted as to look down on those who are making an effort to succeed, including presenting a positive image of themselves in front of others.

We are down to earth people. DH and I are ivy league educated. We vacation at luxury resorts. We live in a 6000 sf home. We are not exactly roughing it. We like our life and don't want to move to a certain zip code because certain colleagues tell us to.

You can't fit everything in a small text box. Many of those entitled children did not finish college, had drug problems or only got into 3rd tier colleges despite their parents' legacy. The children who we witnessed who turned out the best were from families who had modest lifestyles despite their parents' high incomes.

PP here. I realize I had typos. I'm sleepy and my eyes are tired.

To the OP, your DH should probably invest in a few good suits and buy a new car. At least buy a new Camry instead of driving around an old one.
