DH is a surgeon and earns about $900k. His partners always comment on our modest lifestyle. It has become sort of a joke. Many of his colleagues are country club types who live in Mclean. We have a lovely home in a fine school district. We are happy where we are. Throughout the years, we have met many different types of professionals with vastly different lifestyles. We have witnessed many entitled kids from wealthy households who did the best for everything - best private schools, best homes, best vacations, best cars, best boats, best country club. We do not want our kids to be that way.
I do know what you mean, and I also know of successful people whose kids are so spoiled and entitled that it's likely that the generational wealth pretty much stops with them. I guess it depends on how you raise the kids. We live in McLean, best schools, best vacations, best cars, etc. However, my kids are taught that all of this did not come from being lazy and idle. It takes persistent hard work and discipline to make good life choices and earn success. We also teach them that success is sometimes fragile, and that at the end of the day, the only important thing that is everlasting is family and time together. I think it's a sign of weakness that the only way you and your kids avoid being corrupted by consumption is to avoid it.
